Piper Aircraft joins national effort to manufacture protective gear
More accustomed to building single- and twin-engine airplanes, Piper Aircraft Inc. in Vero Beach switched gears during the coronavirus pandemic to produce protective gear to help support the needs of Cleveland Clinic Indian River Hospital.

Additionally, Piper donated more than 1,300 N95 masks manufactured by 3M to the hospital.

Spokeswoman Jacqueline Carlon said the N95 masks were part of Piper’s surplus supply accumulated as Piper shifted to R95 masks, which are more commonly used in manufacturing.

Piper had been exploring ways it could help the local medical community deal with the shortage of personal protective equipment.

The company’s manufacturing engineering team then... Read more >>

John’s Island Foundation Awards Grant to Youth Guidance Mentoring Academy
Members of the John’s Island Foundation awarded a $50,000 grant to Youth Guidance Mentoring Academy. The Foundation awarded a total of $853,563 in grant monies to twenty-six local agencies.

“We are delighted to be a recipient of this grant,” said Phil Barnes, Youth Guidance Executive Director. “It will enable us to repair our building’s old air conditioning system. This will ensure that our kids are cool in the summer and can continue learning and benefitting from our one-on-one and group mentoring programs.”

Youth Guidance is dedicated to enriching the lives of Indian River County youth through mentoring relationships that inspire trust, self-esteem, and positive futures. Youth Guidance works with children ages 5-18. Programs are all free and children are provided with a nutritious meal before programs.

Youth Guidance serves children from low-income homes, who without guidance, may remain trapped in a cycle of generational poverty. With direction from our staff, mentors and volunteers, these children can experience a path toward a brighter future.

If you are interested in becoming a sponsor, mentor, volunteering, or learning more about Youth Guidance Mentoring Academy call 772-492-3933 or visit us at www.youthguidanceprogram.org.

Let’s stay open St. Lucie!
As Florida continues to experience daily growth in Covid-19 cases, the St. Lucie County Chamber of Commerce would like to remind you how important it is to continue the reopening process. Double digit unemployment is not sustainable and contradictory to a healthy economy.

Our nation is facing formidable obstacles in the fight against this global pandemic. Risky behavior could result in a backslide of restrictions. With so much at stake, we want to encourage you to maintain minimum safety standards and are asking for cooperation of courtesy. Let’s err on the side of caution. Social distance, wash your hands, sanitize, and wear a mask. In a time where many of us are feeling helpless, there is something you can do. Protect yourself, your family, your friends, and your co-workers. It doesn’t matter what you believe, or what you are fighting for, you’re doing it for others, not for yourself! Let’s stay open St. Lucie!

Disposable masks, cloth masks and sanitizer are in stock and available through the chamber. Click here.

FastSigns of Vero Beach recognizes essential workers while raising money for United Against Poverty
FastSigns of Vero Beach has been making an ongoing effort to help recognize our local, essential workers in conjunction with raising money for United Against Poverty. They designed and sold a yard sign to be displayed thanking our local heroes for $20. Owner, Gordon Sellers, donated $5 to United Against Poverty for each sign sold, while FastSigns was actually closed down themselves. Last week Gordon dropped a check off for $750 representing 150 signs sold. Signs can still be purchased by calling (772) 774-7554 in their continued effort to raise money for United Against Poverty.

Biology Everywhere Virtual Book Talk and Signing
Thursday, July 9 from 5:00 to 6:00 p.m. Virtual happy hour event, with Melanie Peffer, author of Biology Everywhere will be breaking down the science and biology of topics like fermentation, re-usability, biodiversity and de-extinction.

Pour yourself a glass, sit back and relax while learning about the book, Biology Everywhere and the science of everyday life. Attendees may purchase a book online prior or during the event at biologyeverywhere.com.

Biology Everywhere was inspired by conversations I've had with students, family, and friends about fear of science. So many times I've heard people say "I'm not good at science" "I don't think I can understand this" or my personal favorite, was the student who told me "I have learned to hate science," Melanie said, “The Biology Everywhere philosophy that is the foundation of my book and all of my outreach efforts is that when biology content is presented through the lens of our daily experiences and in connection with other disciplines, then not only is it more engaging but also helps build confidence to engage with biology. The Biology Everywhere philosophy is about empowering people to engage with science and biology, a critical skill as we as a society are faced with decisions regarding everything from COVID-19 to conservation to new policy surrounding cutting edge genetic technologies.”

Melanie will be signing and personalizing the books live. This will be an interactive virtual event with Q&A throughout the hour.

This event is FREE for ELC Members and $5 for non-member tickets. Click HERE to become a member for free admission.  Sign up online

One Nonprofit Pays it Forward
In late May, it was reported that a local nonprofit lost its delivery vehicle due to an accident in Fellsmere. The accident’s only fatality was the vehicle itself and for Ted Pankiewicz Sr, founder of For the Love of Paws, a local nonprofit that provides adoption services, peace of mind and pet food to senior citizens and their furry companions when they can no longer care for their pets, that was his singular concern. Without the large space the van offered, deliveries would run slower and take longer. This was something the CEO at the Mental Health Association in Indian River County, Dr. Nicholas Coppola could not ignore. The MHA’s mission is to provide immediate access without barriers to mental health care but, when it gets right down to it, the underlying wish is to make sure those who need help, get it. The people who depend on and look forward to deliveries from For the Love of Paws should have access to help and the men and women who dedicate their time to making sure they do will no longer not have to worry.

As luck would have it, the MHA had an extra van at the Martin County Drop-In & Recovery Center. Immediately, Dr. Coppola approached Board Members with the idea of donating the van to fellow nonprofit and it was decided that... Read more >>

City of PSL receives $50,000 Our Town Grant from the National Endowment for the Arts
The City will become a more beautiful place with the growth of Port St. Lucie’s Art in Public Places program thanks to a $50,000 grant that was approved today by the National Endowment for the Arts.

National Endowment for the Arts Chairman Mary Anne Carter has approved more than $84 million in grants as part of the Arts Endowment’s second major funding announcement for fiscal year 2020. Included in this announcement is an Our Town award of $50,000 to the City of Port St. Lucie to support the development of an Arts Master Plan. This is one of 51 grants nationwide that the agency has approved in this category.

“These awards demonstrate the resilience of the arts in America, showcasing not only the creativity of their arts projects but the organizations’ agility in the face of a national health crisis,” said Mary Anne Carter, chairman of the National Endowment for the Arts. “We celebrate organizations like the City of Port St. Lucie for providing opportunities for learning and engagement through the arts in these times.”

This grant is crucial to fund the development of the City’s first-ever Arts Master Plan. The City is working with a consultant to conduct a robust community engagement process and create a master plan that better connects and strengthens arts and cultural assets in our community, which is experiencing significant growth. The City of Port St. Lucie and its partners will host a pop-up arts event at the culmination of the project to celebrate the adoption of the plan. Residents can now participate in a survey to help build the plan at www.cityofpsl.com/publicart.

Mayor Oravec and City Councilwoman Jolien Caraballo both separately met with NEA officials to discuss the challenges the City faces in fostering arts/cultural programming within the growing community. The NEA has recommended that Port St. Lucie develop an arts and culture master plan that assesses existing assets, identifies community needs, coordinates local arts organizations, and provides a long-term roadmap for cultural development in the community. Port St. Lucie will model its arts and cultural master planning efforts on the impressive strategy developed in Decatur, Georgia, by the New York-based consulting firm Lord Cultural Resources.
