Humane Society of St. Lucie County adopts 136 dogs & cats in one weekend
The Humane Society of St. Lucie County joined forces with Petco Love—formerly known as the Petco Foundation, a national non-profit working to lead and inspire change for animals—on a shared mission to find homes for dogs and cats. The event took place on June 28th, 29th, and 30th, resulting in the adoption of 61 dogs and 75 cats at our regional event hosted here in St. Lucie County.
The organization partnered with four other local animal welfare groups to host this regional event, achieving 136 adoptions in total. Last year, the shelter alone had 21 adoptions during this event; this year, they had 42, which is much higher than any normal adoption weekend. During the event, all adoption fees were waived, and all pets were spayed or neutered and up-to-date on their vaccinations.
“We are thrilled with the success of the MEGA Adoption event. Our shelter alone achieved 42 adoptions in just two days—an incredible achievement and a testament to the power of collaboration. Adoptions typically slow during summertime, so having our largest adoption weekend ever at this critical time is especially impactful. Florida ranks as the fourth worst state for euthanasia, making the nearly 2,000 adoptions statewide during this event truly remarkable. Together, we are making a significant difference in the lives of these animals and our community,” said Shannon Glendinning, Director of Development at the Humane Society of St. Lucie County.
