iPads and laptops purchased for mental health clients
|
|
The coronavirus pandemic has temporarily closed eight New Horizons outpatient offices in the four counties, but with help from the Community Foundation of Martin and St. Lucie and the St. Lucie Children’s Services Council New Horizons has been able to purchase iPads and laptops so clients without them can receive services online.
The devices allow children and adults to meet face-to-face via video with New Horizon’s doctors, nurses, therapists,
counselors, case managers, peers, and administrative staff, using communication
applications such as Facetime, Skype and Zoom.
“I can’t even count how many of my clients have told me, ‘I’m so relieved you are still available, I don’t know where I’d be if you weren’t,’” said Jen Timothy, manager of the medication assisted treatment program, an outpatient approach to opioid addiction.

Van Duzer Foundation gets grant for pizza program
|
|
The Van Duzer Foundation was recently awarded a $1,000 Walmart Community Giving Grant through Sam’s Club #4972, in Port St. Lucie, to help support its Slices for Seniors program. The Slices for Seniors program was created as a response to the COVID-19 global pandemic by pizza shop owner Scott Van Duzer with assistance from philanthropist and dermatologist Dr. Shamsher Singh.
The program started very small, with just a few individuals delivering free pizza to seniors. Within just two weeks of implementation, more than 1,000 seniors had received pizza deliveries through the Slices for Seniors program.
For Van Duzer and Dr. Singh, who don their own protective masks and personally deliver the meals to seniors, senior living facilities, and shut-ins throughout St. Lucie County, the grant will help them continue sharing meals and memories.
“We wear masks when we deliver each day,” says Van Duzer, but I’m pretty sure the recipients can see our smiles despite the personal protective equipment. Sometimes, I wish the mask would hide the tears that spring to my eyes when I see how happy our small offering has made the seniors.”

HOMETOWN HERO
BY MARYANN KETCHAM

Thirteen-hour days, long round trip commutes from Port St. Lucie to Vero Beach, hidden pathogens, deadly diseases, and yet Emily Brennan remains steadfast.
"I got this," she continually reassures her anxious father, John Brennan.
For the past five or so years, Emily has been employed in the nursing field while attending Kaiser University full time working towards her nursing degree. She has spent the last two years as a Registered Nurse at the Cleveland Clinic Indian River Hospital.
Despite the risks to her life, her commitment to caring for the sick never falters. She continually goes above and beyond what is expected.
"I'm sure you can imagine the fear a father has watching his daughter head off to the front lines to work with COVID 19 patients," said John. "Emily works on the telemetry floor and also in the Intensive Care Unit."
"At the beginning of the pandemic, when the CDC guidelines were not as stringent, and PPE (personal protective equipment) was in relatively short supply, I began to experience a sense of guilt for supporting her decision to become a nurse. But, through it all, her dedication continues to inspire me."
