Martin County Boys & Girls Clubs board member celebrated at national conference with Lifetime Achievement award

Appearing in the attached photo: (L-R) James L. Newland, Val McNeely, Jim Clark President & CEO Boys & Girls Clubs of America, and Lorraine Orr Executive Vice President and Chief Operations Office BGCA.

It’s the highest acclaim the Boys & Girls Clubs movement can bestow to celebrate outstanding service from a volunteer leader. Earlier in May at the Boys & Girls Clubs of America national conference in Chicago, this tribute was granted to longtime board member Val McNeely.

McNeely received the James L. Newland Lifetime Achievement Award in Board Leadership for demonstrating “extraordinary service and devotion to the mission of Boys & Girls Clubs, both locally and nationally,” says Keith “Fletch” Fletcher, President, and CEO of Boys & Girls Clubs of Martin County.

Fletcher cited McNeely’s commitment to ensuring the highest possible safety standards for young people attending BGCMC Clubs, as well as establishing a fund to improve Club infrastructure, enhance security measures, and support programs dedicated to the members’ emotional growth and well-being.

“No one person has been there for our organization more frequently than Val McNeely,” says Fletcher. “Whether it was a safety concern or an opportunity for growth, Val wasted no time in finding or creating solutions. Her nimble, innovative style is an excellent example of leadership in action. And she deserves a great deal of credit for forging the foundation of our incoming flagship Club in Stuart and the state-of-the-art workforce collaborations it will offer our members.”

“It's impossible to overstate the value of the positive environments in our Clubs. They exude an intentional balance of safety, security, warmth, and welcoming,” says Kathy Parsons, BGCMC Board Chair. “Which is more important than ever when so many of our Club members live in challenging environments exacerbated by the ongoing pandemic.”

Looking ahead to the opportunity to serve even more children and families in Martin County, BGCMC is planning for a new state-of-the-art Club in the heart of Stuart, on property leased from the Martin County School District. In addition to offering a gym, classrooms, creative space, and all the features associated with a traditional Club environment, the incoming facility will feature workforce laboratories equipped with the technologies and tools needed to prepare members for a variety of trades, vocations, and specialties. Through partnerships with local employers, members will not only gain new skills and in some cases, certifications, but also build relationships essential to employment opportunities in the local workforce.

About the Boys & Girls Clubs of Martin County

Stonemont Financial Group breaks ground for St. Lucie County’s largest building

Stonemont Financial Group breaks ground for St. Lucie County’s largest building

St. Lucie County officials and Stonemont Financial Group representatives broke ground for the South Florida Logistics Center 95 May 25.

Groundbreaking ceremonies were held on May 25 for what will be, at 1.1. million square feet, the largest building in unincorporated St. Lucie County.

Stonemont Financial Group, a private real estate investment firm specializing in industrial development and net lease assets, is constructing the South Florida Logistics Center 95, a two-building, Class-A, 1.3-million-square-foot speculative industrial development on Orange Avenue at South Kings Highway.  In addition to the 1.1.-million-square-foot cross-dock building, the company is also constructing a 245,300-square-foot rear-load facility in the park.

The site and buildings are being developed with functional, state-of-the-art features tailored for e-commerce and third-party logistics users and is anticipated to be ready for occupancy in early 2023. The project marks Stonemont’s initial venture in the South Florida region, with the firm already active in Jacksonville, Orlando, Lakeland and Tampa.

“The location of this development provides an immediate competitive advantage for e-commerce providers and other logistics operators who have to meet growing consumer demand for rapid delivery,” said Zack Markwell, managing principal and CEO at Stonemont Financial Group. “Our team is already fielding a number of inquiries from prospective users who not only need to be within close range of South Florida’s booming population but can also have better proximity further north to the ports in Jacksonville and Savannah. The business-friendly environment and cost-of-living advantages offered by St. Lucie County are an additional bonus, and we thank the EDC for their partnership in transforming our vision into reality.”

“With 62% of our workforce commuting outside the county each day for work, Stonemont Financial Group’s investment in St. Lucie County will not only help make hundreds of jobs available for our residents, having these jobs close to home will deliver the biggest benefit of all – time. Time for parents to be active in their children’s schools, time for family dinners, time to enjoy all the leisure activities our county has to offer, time for working men and women to be active in their communities,” said St. Lucie County Commission Chairman Sean Mitchell. “It’s also exciting to be breaking ground today for what will be the largest building in the unincorporated county.”

“The location of this Class-A facility is ideal not only for the ultimate end-users but also for residents of Fort Pierce and northern St. Lucie County who are seeking career opportunities with good pay and benefits,” said Pete Tesch, president of the Economic Development Council of St. Lucie County (EDC). “It is gratifying to see that top-tier companies like Stonemont have discovered our county’s ready workforce, great location and outstanding quality of life.”

JLL is overseeing leasing for the project with space from 50,000 to 1.1 million square feet available for lease. JLL is a global professional services firm specializing in real estate and investment management.

Evans General Contractors is managing construction operations. Evans is a leading design-build, general contracting, and construction management firm headquartered in Atlanta.  Engineering Design & Construction, Inc. of Port St. Lucie is the project’s civil engineer.

Stonemont’s ability to source and capitalize on premium speculative development opportunities in markets with high barriers to entry have enabled the firm to grow its industrial portfolio exponentially over the last 24 months, with 15 million square feet of Class-A product currently under construction. The firm currently has nearly 4 million square feet of new industrial space under construction across the state of Florida.

Bank of America accelerates U.S. minimum hourly wage to $22 as next step to $25 by 2025

Bank of America accelerates U.S. minimum hourly wage to $22 as next step to $25 by 2025

Yearly minimum rate of pay for full-time employees will increase to more than $45,000

Bank of America announced it has raised its U.S. minimum hourly wage to $22 as a next step in the company’s plans to increase to $25 by 2025.

This builds on the company’s history of being a national leader in establishing a minimum rate of pay for its U.S. hourly employees. In the last five years, Bank of America raised the minimum hourly wage to $15 in 2017; in 2019 it rose to $17; in 2020, to $20 — and in October 2021, to $21. The company’s increase to paying $22 per hour, effective end of June, will increase annualized salary for full-time employees to more than $45,000.

“Our focus on being a great place to work is core to everything we do and underscores the role our teammates play in our success,” said Sheri Bronstein, chief human resources officer at Bank of America. “We continue to invest in our teammates and their priorities through competitive pay; industry-leading benefits and resources for physical, emotional and financial wellbeing; long-term career development tools and programs; and in our diversity, equity and inclusion efforts across the company, so that we continue to attract and retain the best talent.”

Bank of America’s efforts have been recognized by a number of external organizations including LinkedIn’s “Top Companies in the U.S.” and Fortune’s “100 Best Companies to Work For” list for four consecutive years.

St. Lucie EDC wins three top statewide marketing awards

St. Lucie EDC wins three top statewide marketing awards

The Economic Council of St Lucie County was honored with three top marketing awards from the Florida Economic Development Council.

The Florida Economic Development Council (FEDC) presented its Best in Show 2022 Innovation in Marketing award and two other top awards to the Economic Development Council of St. Lucie County (EDC) at the organization’s annual meeting in St. Petersburg on May 17.

The Best in Show award recognizes excellence in creative, effective and meaningful marketing and is named in memory of Melissa Medley, who developed Florida’s first ever business brand while serving as chief marketing officer for Enterprise Florida. The award-winning entry, “On the Road with Jenn & Jill” created by EDC Director of Business Development Jenn DuBey, is an animated video tour of St. Lucie County’s industrial assets and projects designed to market the county in conjunction with CRE.Converge, a commercial real estate event in Miami in 2021.

“My role at the EDC had changed and I thought creating this video would be an excellent way to educate myself and others about the various projects we are working on in St. Lucie County,” said DuBey. “I started the video with no real idea of how to do it but ended up with something I’m really proud of.”  To view the video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y8u_qi20xOc.

The other two top FEDC innovation in marketing awards recognized the EDC staff’s work during the COVID shutdown in 2020 and its ongoing Work Local St. Lucie campaign to make the county’s large number of commuters aware of jobs available in Port St. Lucie and Fort Pierce.

Judges for the FEDC awards mentioned the innovative partnership between the EDC and the Boys & Girls Clubs of St. Lucie County during the COVID shutdown and its aftermath. Club members were recruited by the EDC to personally visit many small retailers, restaurants and service providers to ensure they were aware of available financial assistance from the federal government. EDC staff also worked with the staff of the Small Business Development Center at Indian River State College to assist with processing aid applications. In addition, EDC staff sent out detailed daily email communications about COVID response programs and related information to the local business community.

“This award is to recognize those EDOs who rose to the occasion and persisted, demonstrating dedication and commitment to the local economy and proved to be a critical resource during crisis and into recovery,” the FEDC noted about the Pivot and Persist award.

The Work Local St. Lucie program includes a section of the EDC’s website, www.youredc.com/worklocal, that lists featured local jobs and links to local employer job boards by industry sector. Regular social media posts, billboards, signage, print and digital advertising, and ongoing partnerships with St. Lucie Public Schools, Indian River State College, CareerSource Research Coast and many other area organizations to address awareness and training to help close skills gaps are all part of the multiyear program.

“The EDC staff is small but mighty, and absolutely dedicated to our mission of promoting economic vitality and enhancing the quality of life in St. Lucie County,” said EDC President Pete Tesch. “We are so honored and humbled that the state’s top economic development association selected our programs and outreach to receive these truly prestigious awards.”

United Way VITA programs concludes tax season, prepared over $1.7M in returns

United Way VITA programs concludes tax season, prepared over $1.7M in returns

The 2022 tax season concludes with $1,733,145 million in returns for Indian River County households who received free tax preparation services offered by the United Way.

The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program is a partnership between United Way and the IRS offered annually from January through Tax Day to assist families and individuals with low to moderate incomes prepare their tax returns for free. This year, twenty-eight IRS-trained and certified volunteers ensured taxpayers received all the credits for which they were eligible and helped put an average refund of $1,867 back into the pockets of Indian River County residents.

“We served more people this year than ever before, especially at a time when we know many households in our community faced financial hardships due to Covid-19,” explained Meredith Egan, CEO, United Way of Indian River County. “It’s a milestone we’re really proud of and look forward to making that number grow each year.”

Concluding on April 17th, the VITA program filed a total of 1,360 tax returns, which have an average adjusted gross income of $23,000 per household. Indian River County residents received $516,897 in Earned Income Tax Credits, $27,768 in Child Tax Credits, and $6,547 in Education Tax Credits.

“Because of you, I was able to get my home fumigated for termites which was otherwise unaffordable,” said one tax client in a letter. “Thank you for helping people like me. Your kindness is much appreciated. You are a blessing!”

VITA is critical in helping residents obtain the money available to them and can help a household survive. There is no cost to clients, saving a household an average of $175 in tax preparation fees. Instead, this money can be used to purchase groceries, pay bills, or go towards an emergency savings fund. This year, the total paid preparer cost savings averaged $238,000 for VITA clients in Indian River County.

“We absolutely could not do this without our fleet of dedicated volunteers,” said Stacy Benezra, Community Impact Coordinator, United Way of Indian River County. “With over 2,124 hours logged, they give it their all for our community. We can never thank them enough.”

This program would not be possible without the local sponsors helping cover the costs of offering this service; Jacoby and Handley, PLLC and Kmetz, Elwell, Graham, and Associates PLLC. United Way also congratulates VITA volunteers Ben Tartaglia and David Geiser for receiving a 10-Year Milestone Award from the IRS.

If you would like to learn more about becoming a VITA volunteer or sponsor, please contact Stacy Benezra, Community Impact Coordinator at (772) 567-8900, ext. 120, or [email protected].
