PSL Business Women raise a Treasure Chest of Riches at 30th annual fashion show

PSL Business Women raise a treasure chest of riches at 30th annual fashion show

(L) Lorett Fribourg, (R)Susan Belgard

The Port St. Lucie Business Women (PSLBW), dressed in swirling colors of turquoise, aqua and ultramarine, and in sea-themed patterns, welcomed guests at the sold-out 30th annual Fashion Show on April 30 at the Santa Lucia River Club in Ballantrae. More than $20,000 was raised for their Community Action Grants which are awarded to local nonprofit agencies that benefit women and children, and provide scholarships for women who have chosen to continue their education at Indian River State College. Awards and scholarships will be presented later this year.

“What an amazing turnout!” says Fashion Show co-chair Carissa Vega. “We appreciate all the support we have received from guests and business owners alike over the past 30 years, and look forward to seeing everyone at our 31st Annual PSLBW Fashion Show.”

Luxury couture fashions by Kallee Jackson (kalleejackson.com), bright, geometric dresses by Sabre Mochachino (mochachinolany.com), as well as other chic and casual apparel by Fashionista Boutique (love.mandysauter.com), Gambina Couture, and Sporty Girl Apparel (sportygirlapparel.com) presented a wide range of styles, accessorized by wire-wrapped beach glass and crystals hand-made by L Boutique Jewelry (FB@lboutique jewelry).

The 108 Silent Auction items, including themed gift baskets and gift certificates covering a wide range of choices, generated high-stakes competitiveness. Top takers included a plethora of gift cards presented in a framed collage, a Mets Suite and four tickets to a Marlins game.

Marion Matthes is looking forward to enjoying her 2-night stay at River Palm Cottages & Fish Camp in Jensen Beach. Marilyn Lawless had fun showing off the baroque pearl and blue topaz cocktail ring that she won.

Devon Dwyer, who was wearing the pearl and 14k gold and diamond custom-created necklace that she won at the PSL Business Women’s 2013 Fashion Show, was the winner of the 14-karat gold octopus with diamond eyes necklace, valued at $500 and donated by G. Alan’s Fine Jewelry & Coin in Fort Pierce.

Michelle Caul was all smiles hearing her number called in the 50/50 raffle -- a prize of $800!

The Port St. Lucie Business Women thank those who attended their affair and the following businesses for their support: top Sea Glass Event Sponsor St. Lucie County Children’s Services Council; Pearl Sponsors Donna DeMarchi, Personal Injury Attorney, G. Alan’s Fine Jewelry & Coin and The Cake Lady; Doubloon Sponsor iThink Financial; and Coral Sponsors Katelyn and Andrew Urban of Baron Real Estate, Dwyer Environmental Services, Post Insurance, St. Lucie County Fair, SouthState Bank, Truly Title and Vinyard Institute of Plastic Surgery.

The Port St. Lucie Business Women is a 42-year-old, 501 (c) (6) non-profit professional organization dedicated to promoting the interests of businesswomen and serving our community effectively. For more information, visit PSLBW.com. House of Hope’s 2022 Top Chef Competition

House of Hope’s 2022 Top Chef Competition

(Left to Right) Ed Ciampi, Craig Ahal and Rob Ranieri celebrating the Best Dish award from Top Chef 2019.

Six local people who love food, love to cook, and love the mission of House of Hope will compete on Monday, June 6, for bragging rights to be called the Top Chef of Martin County.

The fourth annual Top Chef competition will be held this year from 7 to 10 p.m. at The District Table and Bar in Stuart. Contenders will learn which protein they’ll be working with a week in advance, but what ingredients are on hand and what the “Special Surprise Ingredient” is for 2022 will be a secret until the competition begins. Some of the ingredients will come straight from House of Hope’s Growing Hope Farm.

During the event, 11 local restaurants will be serving small bites to attendees to stave off their hunger as they watch the chefs prepare their delicious dishes.

“This is a really fun and lively event,” said House of Hope Chief Executive Officer Rob Ranieri. “Our volunteer chefs, none of whom are actually professional chefs, always surprise and impress us with the dishes they prepare.”

The event also has a serious side. House of Hope is seeing an ever-increasing number of Martin County residents who are food insecure and need the services of the organization to feed their families. Funds raised from this fun, food event will go directly to feeding hungry neighbors.

The 2022 competitors are: Donna Forcella, Donna Jenson, Julian Maiucci, Pete Morello, Marybeth Peña, and Joe Tomasiello. Judges will award prizes to the Top Fundraiser and the Best Dish, with the Overall Winner prize going to the chef who excels in a combination of both categories.

Sponsorship support from the following people and organizations is appreciated: Colab Farms, Whiticar Boatworks, Coastal Drive Magazine, The Firefly Group, Florida Power and Light, HBKS Stephen Schramm, Elaine and Jim Matts, McCarthy Summers Law Firm, Rick Carroll Insurance, and the Wong Family Foundation.

Only 200 tickets are available, and tickets from the 2020 event are being honored, so space is limited. To purchase tickets, become a sponsor, or support a favorite chef, go to www.hohmartin.org.

More than 40 nominees including youth groups, individuals, businesses, government agencies and nonprofit organizations, were honored at the 2022 Keep Martin Beautiful Environmental Stewardship Awards ceremony on April 28 at the beautiful oceanfront clubhouse at Sailfish Point Country Club. An enthusiastic and diverse crowd of more than 200 guests attended the event to recognize the nominees’ outstanding efforts in community beautification and revitalization, litter and marine debris removal, recycling and other environmental initiatives. Serving as the organization’s key fundraiser, the event raised more than $40,000 to support its mission to improve and enhance the quality of life in Martin County.

“Each year we continue to be impressed by the creative and impactful ways our nominees show their commitment to and stewardship of our natural environment,” said Craig Ahal, president of Keep Martin Beautiful. “Their projects and initiatives give us great hope for the future of Martin County and our planet.”

Guests enjoyed a lively cocktail hour and passed hors d’oeuvres while engaging in a friendly bidding competition for silent auction items focused on the environment, including an array of nature-themed paintings from local artists and a signed Guy Harvey print.

Fifteen awards were presented during the event. Highlights included the Youth Group Champion award, which was presented to the River Kidz. Created in 2011 by two 10-year-olds, today this group is made up of more than 500 students in Martin County. They participate in numerous environmental activities from creating a workbook that’s now in its fifth edition as part of Martin County School District’s curriculum to lobbying at the local and state level against potentially harmful issues that affect our waterways. The Community Enrichment Award was presented to the Jensen Beach Garden Club for the gardens they create and care for throughout Jensen Beach and Rio.

Two dozen sponsors provided financial and in-kind support, for which the organization is grateful: Presenting Sponsor, Sailfish Point Country Club; Champion Sponsors, Sunrise Grove Commerce Center and Three Lakes; Steward Sponsors, Martin County Board of County Commissioners District Five Edward V. Ciampi and Waste Management; Sustainer Sponsors, AHS Residential, FPL, Meritage Homes, and van Vonno Consulting; and Supporter Sponsors, Bonnie Landry & Associates, Camo Farms, Captec Engineering, Circular Recycling, City of Stuart, ColorLength, Ecological Associates, Fred Astaire Dance Studio, Goldasich Environmental, Illustrated Properties, Jenkins Landscape, Lucido & Associates, Manatee Pocket Yacht Sales, The Mil-Cor Group; The Pulte Group, Shearwater Marine, the Stull-Wise Family, Treasure Coast Urgent Care; Program Partners, Crown Trophies, The Firefly Group and Steven Martine Photography.

President of Cleveland Clinic Martin Health joins Boys & Girls Clubs of Martin County Board of Directors

President of Cleveland Clinic Martin Health joins Boys & Girls Clubs of Martin County Board of Directors

Boys & Girls Clubs of Martin County welcomes Rishi P. Singh, MD, to its Board of Directors. President of Cleveland Clinic Martin Health, North and South Hospitals, staff surgeon at the Cole Eye Institute, and professor of ophthalmology at Lerner College of Medicine in Cleveland, Dr. Singh is a towering figure in medicine and highly regarded for his many achievements inside and outside of the operating room.

“Dr. Singh is an extraordinarily gifted, and successful individual and we’re incredibly excited to welcome him to our board of directors,” says Keith “Fletch” Fletcher, CEO of BGCMC. “Already dedicated to the Boys & Girls Clubs movement from his involvement in Cleveland, he’ll find himself in good company among many other diverse and vastly accomplished fellow board members such as incoming Board Chair Kathryn Parsons and Diana Brooks, Immediate Past Board Chair, both of whom have made—and continue to make—an immeasurable difference in the lives of thousands of Martin County children.”

Ellen Libby Ph.D. also joins the Board. Dr. Libby, an author, lecturer, and psychotherapist with more than 35 years of experience has devoted her professional life to the social and emotional well-being of individuals and families. Other transitions include the advancement of Kathryn Parsons to Board Chair, and Diana Brooks will now be Immediate Past Board Chair following years of service distinguished by record-setting fundraising for the organization despite challenges and interruptions caused by the pandemic and launching Building Great Futures- an exciting and comprehensive campaign for the youth of Martin County.

“So many of the children we serve are still enduring tremendous hardships due to various circumstances, including the pandemic,” adds Fletcher. “We should all feel very blessed that our Club members have in their corner such highly successful, respected, and generous leaders committed to ensuring the children get the encouragement, care, and opportunities they so deserve and dream of.”

Henry Saxon, regional service director of Boys & Girls Clubs of America, notes key qualities in the leaders on the Martin County chapter board of directors that exceed even their most celebrated professional achievements. “It’s not just about their resumes; it’s about their character,” Saxon says. “These people could be doing just anything, yet they are dedicating their time and effort to serving children in need of safety, patience, acceptance, knowledge, and opportunity. Drs. Libby and Singh will fit in well and we look forward to what they will accomplish together next.”
