To be a great educator, she believes one must never stop learning.

Dr. Massnick’s fascination with criminal justice started during a college psychology lecture on serial killers. That single lesson turned into an extensive career as a criminologist who specializes in sexual offenders and serial killers. She is also a subject matter expert on victimology and forensic psychology. Massnick has her own podcast which is victim centered.

The Distinguished Lecture Series is presented by the Fielden Institute for Lifelong Learning. Doors open 30 minutes before the lecture. Lectures last approximately one hour and are followed by a moderated 30-minute question-and-answer session. Registration for the five-part series is $150 per person for new and returning members; $100 per person for lifetime members and peer leaders. If available, individual lecture seats are offered at $35 one week before each of the lectures.

Florida First Capital remains top SBA lender

Florida First Capital remains top SBA lender

Florida First Capital Finance Corporation (FFC) is pleased to announce it is once again the top Small Business Administration (SBA) lender in Florida for fiscal year 2022. This is the 7th consecutive year FFC has been #1 statewide.

Florida First Capital provided $348,713,000 in SBA dollars to small businesses and helped create 2,621 jobs. The company also finished the fiscal year ranked fourth nationally out of 270 CDCs across the country.

Florida First Capital is a nonprofit certified development company, created by the state of Florida to promote economic development and job creation by small businesses. SBA 504 loans are provided in partnership between CDCs like Florida First Capital and commercial lenders. In FY 2022, Florida First Capital and its commercial lending partners loaned $859,560,078 total dollars to Florida’s small businesses.

“This accomplishment is a testament to the Florida First Capital professional lending team and our lending partners who work diligently to help small business owners grow and succeed through the 504 loan program,” said Todd Kocourek, President and CEO of Florida First Capital Finance.

The SBA 504 Loan Program provides up to 90% financing at below-market, fixed interest rates for as long as 25 years to help small businesses buy or build commercial property, purchase heavy duty machinery and equipment and/or refinance commercial debt. “In a rising rate market, the 504 loan remains the best solution for small business owners,” said Kocourek.

In the SBA North Florida District during FY 2022, Florida First Capital dominated the market with $142,999,000 total approved dollars and 1,215 jobs created. In fact, of the SBA lenders serving north Florida, Florida First Capital lent 66% more SBA dollars and created more than twice the number of jobs than the next 5 lenders combined.

Since 1983, Florida First Capital has helped thousands of small businesses grow and expand, create jobs, and strengthen Florida’s economy. For more information on the SBA 504 Loan Program, visit our website at www.ffcfc.com or call 800.504.LOAN.

Holiday treat to benefit Mary’s Home

After a two-year absence, one of the area’s most heartwarming holiday celebrations returns when Mary’s Home of the Treasure Coast presents We’ve Made Room at the Inn.

Local businessman and philanthropist Steven Vitale has given the nonprofit access to his award-winning Inn and guest houses on Seminole Street and Colorado Avenue, which in turn have been spectacularly decorated by some of the Treasure Coast’s most respected designers. Divine Designs of the Treasure Coast -Trisha Piazza, Wonder Walls by Nikki K Interiors and Doris Clements Interiors have offered their expertise and talent and the result is charming cottages with Christmas décor that have no equal. The Ernest Lyons House will be decorated by the residents and staff of Mary’s Home.

The houses will be open from 11 a.m.- 8 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 10 and from noon – 5 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 11.

The Old Colorado Inn is located at 211 S. Colorado Avenue in Stuart.

Tickets are $50 per person and include yummy Christmas treats, a raffle ticket for a Christmas Tree decorated by Dana Godfrey of Treasure Coast Home and Décor, as well as assorted holiday and gift baskets and entertainment provided by choirs and bands from local churches and schools.

Sponsorship opportunities for We’ve Made Room at the Inn are available at a variety of levels. Tickets can be purchased online at www.maryshome.org or at the door.

Now in its second decade, the role of Mary’s Home remains the same: to provide homeless, pregnant women with the support and guidance they need to become self-sufficient and make good choices for themselves and their children. To learn more, visit www.maryshome.org.

Port St. Lucie Business Women unite to raise funds for breast cancer research

Port St. Lucie Business Women, family members and friends joined together in support of Making Strides Against Breast Cancer. Back row: Elaine Anderson, Ellen Falk, Madelyn Katz, Donna DeMarchi, Jennifer Wiggins and her son Carter, Dorothy Kamm; Front row: Diann McDonough, Mandy Sauter and her daughter, Mindi Fetterman

After a three-year hiatus, the Port St. Lucie Business Women joined forces, forming a team of walkers, and proudly sponsoring a water station at the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walk held on October 22 in Tradition. “Surviving and Thriving” was the theme that united 15 Port St. Lucie Business Women and their family members and friends, several of whom are survivors themselves.

Clusters of pink and lavender flowers were chosen to depict the theme of surviving and thriving in the Port St. Lucie Business Women’s custom team T-shirt, designed by Business Women member Diane Gallagher of DSG Designs & Photography.

Breast cancer is the second most common cancer in American women and the second leading cause of cancer death in women. Due to improvements in treatment and early detection, there has been a 40 percent decline in breast cancer deaths since 1985. Funds raised from Making Strides Against Breast Cancer has funded breakthrough research, provided free rides to cancer patients, wigs free of charge to women, and other support services, access to lifesaving screenings, and so much more. The Port St. Lucie Business Women is proud to support the American Cancer Society’s search for a cure, education and outreach.

Lois McGuire joins EFMC board

Lois McGuire joins EFMC board

Lois McGuire

Lois McGuire, who has enjoyed an esteemed career in the academic world, has joined the board of the Education Foundation of Martin County (EFMC).

The news was shared by Lisa Rhodes, EFMC Executive Director, who has worked closely with McGuire on several EFMC projects.  “Lois has been a life-long education advocate and longtime supporter of the EFMC.  We are fortunate to now have Lois lend her leadership and expertise as a board member.”

McGuire and her husband moved to Harbour Ridge Yacht & Country Club from Bayonne, N.J. in 2002. Prior to that she spent decades teaching in New Jersey schools, beginning her career as a fourth and fifth grade teacher, rising to Superintendent of Schools in Kinnelon, the job from which she retired.

She received several awards for excellence in teaching from the State of New Jersey. A highlight of McGuire’s career came when she was asked to join then-New Jersey Governor Thomas Kean at a Governor’s Conference in Cincinnati to discuss at-risk youth.

McGuire earned a Doctorate in Education from Rutgers University and has been a consultant to the U.S. Department of Education and the New Jersey Department of Education.

A born teacher through and through, McGuire created an innovative English as Second Language program when she first moved to Harbour Ridge. Many employees in the community’s landscape, food services and maintenance departments were Spanish-speaking only, making it difficult for them to communicate with residents.

McGuire organized the scores of retired teachers who lived in Harbour Ridge to teach English in a five-day a week program that continued for four-plus years. The attendees earned GEDs, became US citizens and prospered in their jobs. The program was retired when it was no longer needed.

McGuire has also been a member of the Library Foundation of Martin County.

She currently teaches Mah Jongg at Harbour Ridge, where 135 residents take part in a high-energy weekly game. It has become the basis of a successful fundraiser for the Education Foundation of Martin County.  This year’s EFMC Charity Mah Jongg Tournament at Harbour Ridge is scheduled for March 3, 2023.

McGuire is the successful author of several books: Don't Be That KID! at Home, Don’t Be That KID! At School and the Don’t Be That KID! At School Resource Guide to help educators and parents guide their children through the maze of building essential positive character traits.

McGuire says she always wanted to be a teacher. “I love to be engaged in something that helps children. It has been my whole life and it will never stop.  I am honored to be a part of a group of dedicated community members who want to assist teachers to expand the educational possibilities for children in Martin County.”
