Community Appreciation Day at Mckee Botanical Gardens

McKee Botanical Garden announced that it has been recognized as a 2021 Travelers’ Choice award winner as one of the Top 10% of Attractions Worldwide.  This achievement celebrates businesses that consistently deliver fantastic experiences to the Garden’s members and visitors around the globe, having earned great traveler reviews on Tripadvisor over the last 12 months. As challenging as the past year was, McKee Botanical Garden stood out by continuously delighting our visitors and offering them a place to heal and recharge.

“Congratulations to all the winners of the 2021 Travelers’ Choice Awards,” said Kanika Soni, Chief Commercial Officer at Tripadvisor. “I know the past year has been extremely challenging for tourism businesses. What has impressed me is how businesses adapted to these challenges, implementing new cleanliness measures, adding social distancing guidelines, and utilizing technology to prioritize guest safety. The Travelers’ Choice Awards highlight the places that are consistently excellent - delivering quality experiences time and time again even while navigating changing customer expectations and new ways of working. Based on a full year of reviews from customers, this award speaks to the great service and experience you provided guests in the midst of a pandemic.”

flyGATEWAY Aviation Institute Places Order for 20 Piper Pilot 100i Aircraft

flyGATEWAY Aviation Institute Places Order for 20 Piper Pilot 100i Aircraft

Piper Aircraft has announced an order for twenty (20) Pilot 100i single-engine trainers from Pennsylvania and Delaware based flyGATEWAY Aviation Institute. The order was received on the third day of EAA AirVenture 2021.  flyGATEWAY, a Liberty University Flight Training Affiliate, will begin taking delivery of their first fourteen aircraft in January of 2022. The remaining six (6) aircraft will be delivered later in 2022. The aircraft will be spread across flyGATEWAY’s four locations and will support their Part 141 career pilot training program.

flyGATEWAY is a 501(c)(3) organization that was established in 2018. Since that time, flyGATEWAY has grown to three locations across PA and DE with a fourth location coming soon in Lancaster, PA in September 2021.  With 35 flight instructors, 30 aircraft, and 300+ flight students, flyGATEWAY has become the largest regional Part 141 flight academy in our area.

“We are extremely excited to work with one of the premier flight schools in the northeast. Their commitment to providing exceptional flight training that is accessible and more affordable is very well aligned with Piper’s mission and commitment to the training industry”, said Hans Stancil, Fleet Sales Director for North America.

“The Pilot 100i greatly increases our ability to deliver training efficiently and cost-effectively while working to cultivate an unmatched pilot pipeline for the airline industry,” said Regis de Ramel, Board Chairman of flyGATEWAY.

SUNRISE THEATRE RECEIVES SHUTTERED VENUE OPERATORS GRANT

Sunrise Theatre receives Shuttered

Venue Operators Grant

National Independent Venue Association (NIVA) member Sunrise Theatre just received an approval notice from the Small Business Administration (SBA) stating that its Shuttered Venue Operators Grant (SVOG) application has been approved. This emergency relief, outlined in the $16 billion Save Our Stages Act as part of the COVID-19 Relief Bill signed into law Dec. 27, 2020, will provide the Sunrise Theatre with $1,096,000 in funds to enable it to return to doing what it’s known for: putting on shows, welcoming artists and fans, and bringing vibrancy, jobs, and visitors to the historic downtown Fort Pierce. The Sunrise Theatre thanks our local Florida legislative delegation who co-sponsored the SOS Act, which will indeed Save Our Stages!

“The situation was dire,” said Sharon Engle, Director of the Sunrise Theatre. “Like independent venues, promoters and festivals across the country, we were the first to close, had no revenue but we were overwhelmed with all of our usual overhead. Without this emergency relief, small business like ours would be shutting forever.” We owe enormous gratitude to those who spearheaded the funding legislation: Senators Amy Klobuchar and John Cornyn, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, Representatives Roger Williams and Peter Welch, who led the charge to ensure that we will reopen, rehire, and return as the economic engines for our communities across the nation,” said Engle. “Together with 230 bipartisan cosponsors in the House and Senate, our Congressional champions, made it possible for us to once again be the magnet for commerce and renewal in our neighborhoods and bring back the joy and diversion we’ve all missed so much.”

The beautifully restored, intimate 1,200-seat Sunrise Theatre Mainstage and accompanying 210 seat Black Box Theatre, located in Historic Downtown Fort Pierce, presents national touring Broadway shows, musical and comedy acts, ballet and opera companies with full orchestras.

IRSC Foundation Executive Director to Retire

IRSC Foundation
executive director to retire

Indian River State College (IRSC) announces the retirement of Ann Decker, Executive Director of the Indian River State College Foundation, who has served the College with distinction since 2007. Under Decker’s leadership, the Foundation’s fundraising efforts enabled IRSC to recruit and retain the highest quality faculty, maintain a vibrant learning environment, and provide students with critical financial support. Since her arrival, the Foundation’s assets have increased four-fold to nearly $200 million.

With student success at the fore, Decker and her team have raised funds to support the construction of 14 new buildings and numerous building renovations. Each year their efforts provide some 4,000 IRSC students with Foundation scholarships—more than $4 million annually. Today, 462 scholarships are available through the IRSC, up from some 200 when Decker first arrived.

“The Indian River State College enterprise would not be where it is today without the leadership of Ann Decker at the helm of the IRSC Foundation,” said Sandra Krischke, IRSC District Board of Trustees Chair. “Scholarships have made educational dreams a reality for tens of thousands of students, and their success stories are a tribute to Ann’s great work.”

The IRSC Foundation operates several additional initiatives in support of IRSC and the community. These include:

  • Take Stock in Children, a comprehensive program that helps at-risk, low-income children succeed by providing college scholarships, volunteer mentors, student advocates/case managers, early intervention, and long-term support;
  • Alto “Bud” Adams Jr. River Hammock, the College’s 186-unit student residence complex located on IRSC Main Campus;
  • The Fielden Institute for Lifelong Learning, for men and women age 50 and better who explore shared topics of interest in a college atmosphere. Dr. Jean Dickinson Fielden endows the Institute in memory of her late husband, Dr. John “Jack” Seward Fielden;
  • Department Chair Excellence Awards, Faculty of the Year and Endowed Teaching Chair programs that recognize instructional excellence and support innovation in education; and
  • Entrepreneur of the Year Award, established in 2000 by the IRSC Foundation and 13 other founding members, to promote awareness and appreciation of the free enterprise system.

“Whether it’s finding a namesake for a multi-million dollar facility or helping a student with emergency funds in a crisis, Ann Decker poured her heart and soul into Indian River State College and the Foundation that supports it,” said Hal Roberts, IRSC Foundation Board Chair. “Many future generations of IRSC employees and students will benefit from her hard work. We are truly indebted to Ann for her dedicated service.”

Prior to her role with IRSC Foundation, Decker spent more than two decades in administrative roles serving Congressmen in the U. S. House of Representatives, including positions as Chief of Staff and District Manager. Decker was also co-owner and co-founder of a professional political consulting firm and has held senior-level positions in finance for private businesses. In 1999, she became a Founder and Board Member of First Peoples Bank, holding various committee and leadership posts. Throughout her career, Decker has built positive and enduring relationships within the community. Her professional and volunteer service to the communities where she works and lives and to the State of Florida has earned her dozens of accolades.

“My work with the IRSC Foundation has been the highlight of my professional career,” exclaims Ann Decker. “It has been my great pleasure to be involved with the generosity of this community to move forward a common mission of providing hope and opportunity to our students, faculty and staff. I am indeed the lucky one.”

Decker will leave IRSC at the end of the month. She plans to travel extensively with her husband Keith and live by her motto: “don’t postpone joy.”

The outstanding team at the IRSC Foundation will stay on and maintain all programs and services. The Foundation Team will report to Michael Hageloh, who has been named Interim Vice President for Institutional Advancement. A national search for Decker’s replacement will soon be underway.

This fall, Indian River County youth ages 16-24 will have the opportunity to explore a career in Welding, Carpentry, HVAC, Electrical and Plumbing - for free! The Youth Guidance Pre-Apprenticeship program is the first of its kind in Indian River County. It covers basic tools and materials while offering an in-depth overview of each trade.

Local Arts Agency Prepares to Host Arts & Mindfulness Fest

Local arts agency prepares to
host arts & mindfulness festival

St. Lucie Cultural Alliance has launched many programs, activities, and events that add to local quality of life, including the one of its kind, Treasure Coast Arts & Mindfulness Fest. For the 2nd annual, vendors, artists, mindfulness instructors, art lovers, and zen passionate individuals are invited to make more impact and be involved in decision-making by joining its planning committees.

  • Steering
  • Marketing
  • Sponsorship
  • Entertainment and more

The first committee meeting is on Wednesday, August 25, 5:30 PM at the Alliance Gallery, 3rd floor at 111 Orange Ave in Fort Pierce.

 “The work we do in the arts community is for the community. Therefore, we find it necessary to have a diverse committee representing the different perspectives in the Treasure Coast. So we are opening the door to artists, vendors, event-goers, and the general public to be our community’s voice and sit at our decision-making table.” said Alyona Ushe, St. Lucie Cultural Alliance Executive Director.

The first annual Treasure Coast Arts & Mindfulness Fest, presented by St. Lucie Cultural Alliance and MIDFLORIDA Credit Union Event Center, received lots of press and saw great success for everyone involved, especially participating vendors. The event merchants seem to be pleased with the outcomes of their involvement in the festival, as seen in this video titled Treasure Coast Arts & Mindfulness Fest - The Vendor Experience.

Smithsonian Marine Ecosystems Exhibit turns 20

Smithsonian Marine Ecosystems Exhibit at the St. Lucie County Aquarium turns 20

Twenty years ago this month, the Smithsonian Marine Ecosystems Exhibit at the St. Lucie County Aquarium opened to the public. The exhibit includes several large dynamic aquarium displays of local marine habitats, a classroom space and a gift shop. The building’s stunning centerpiece, a 2,500 gallon living Atlantic Caribbean coral reef that had been on display at the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History in Washington, D.C. since 1980, was transported piece by piece to its new home in Fort Pierce.

While St. Lucie County provided most of the funding for this project, it would not have happened without additional support from the city of Fort Pierce, Indian River State College, the St. Lucie County School District along with several corporate sponsors including Fort Pierce Utilities Authority and Florida Power and Light.

Many improvements have been made at the Aquarium since it first opened on August 28th, 2001. Colorful dioramas, murals and maps of Indian River Lagoon and Florida’s Atlantic coast have covered the walls and interpretive signage has been continually enhanced and updated in order to give visitors a more colorful, in-depth and engaging understanding of the Aquarium’s model ecosystem exhibits. Digital components have been added, including interpretive exhibit videos accessible through QR codes at each exhibit.

Over the years, new exhibits like the installation of a touch tank for visitors to interact with live animals, a vividly-colored live Pacific reef exhibit that highlights the importance of aquaculture as well as numerous microscope displays, give visitors the opportunity to view and learn about the ocean’s smallest denizens. Rotating exhibits and a constantly changing roster of live marine animals have kept the Aquarium fresh, relevant, and offer repeat visitors a new experience each time they visit.

Public programming and education continues to evolve and expand at the Aquarium with the introduction of virtual field trips and digital programs for students in the past year. The Aquarium is looking forward to a new grant-funded educational program series currently being developed in collaboration with the Girl Scouts of Southeast Florida to explore topics like biodiversity, water quality and eDNA in the Indian River Lagoon, continuing to carry forward SMEE staff’s passion for inspiring the next generation of scientists and informed citizens.

Just in time for its twentieth anniversary, the Aquarium is adding brand-new custom-designed permanent educational signage for the exhibit areas and the exterior. To celebrate twenty years as a part of the Treasure Coast community, the Aquarium is offering free admission on Saturday August 28th.  Visitors can meet the Aquarium’s staff and learn how they care for the intricate living ecosystems as well as the ever-popular guided fish feeding tours at 10:30am and 2:30pm led by a Smithsonian educator.
