5K event is newest addition to Hunger Action Month

5K event is newest addition to
Hunger Action Month

Treasure Coast Food Bank will hold its inaugural Out Run Hunger 5k, a family-friendly event to support programs for children, families and seniors. It takes place on Saturday, Sept. 18 at Causeway Cove Marina in Fort Pierce.

As part of Hunger Action Month, Out Run Hunger provides another way for people to help those often facing impossible choices to make ends meet.

“September is Hunger Action Month. It’s a time when we ask everyone to think about our neighbors who often have to make impossible choices, such as buying food or paying the electric bill,” said Judith Cruz, President and CEO of Treasure Coast Food Bank. “Out Run Hunger is one more way that adults and children can take action against hunger.”

The race site offers a flat and fast course, perfect for runners of all levels. All participants will receive a t-shirt and finisher medal. The race will be managed and chip-timed by Southern Timing LLC., and awards will be given to the top three male and female overall finishers and top finishers by age-group.

Dunkin’ Brands is the presenting sponsor of the inaugural Out Run Hunger. Packet pick-up takes place the night before the race at Cobb’s Landing, which is partnering with Treasure Coast Food Bank for the event. Natalie’s Orchid Island Juice Company and ReadyRefresh® will be providing drinks for the event. Learn more or register at stophunger.org/event/out-run-hunger/.

Mattamy Homes begins sales at Emery, a single-family community in Tradition

Mattamy Homes begins sales in Tradition

Mattamy Homes, North America’s largest privately owned homebuilder, has begun selling homes in Emery, a community located in Tradition. Buyers can choose from one- and two-story single-family homes with distinctive exteriors and customizable interior floor plans.

“Homeowners will experience dining, entertaining and shopping, all without leaving Tradition,” said Dan Grosswald, President of Mattamy’s Southeast Florida Division. “We also have state-of-the-art acute care facility at Cleveland Clinic Tradition Hospital. It meets our entire community’s wellbeing needs with award-winning general and specialty services. Tradition is truly a community designed for work, play and life.”

Residents will travel to the Tradition Town Center and a multitude of parks along Tradition’s T Trail, an experiential 20-mile, multimodal system connecting them to the entire community on dedicated paths for biking, walking, running, and carting.

Now under construction on Southwest Tradition Parkway, Emery is open for sales from the Manderlie Sales Center.

team has grown

Roxette Odeja joins HSELC

Hobe Sound Early Learning Center (HSELC) has added an important layer to the services it provides with the addition of Roxette Ojeda to its staff.

Ojeda earned her B.A. in Human Services from Indian River State College.  As a social worker, she will serve as an integral link between the center and the families. Her focus is on supporting teachers and staff with behavioral management and conflict resolution.

She will assess the children’s needs in order to provide direct support and refer to community resources when appropriate. Ojeda will also play a key role in working alongside parents to support their children’s school adjustment, alleviating family stressors that impact the household and increasing parent engagement.

Since joining HSELC this June, she has already connected with 19 families and continues to work with them to ensure their child’s success.

HSELC provides families, regardless of income, an affordable early-education program incorporating nurturing, education, and recreation to stimulate children’s healthy emotional and social development and help them excel in school and life.

Aquaco Farms named as 11th Annual GrowFL Florida Companies to Watch finalist

Aquaco Farms named as 11th Annual GrowFL Florida Companies to Watch finalist

St. Lucie County’s Aquaco Farms has been selected as a 2021 GrowFL Florida Companies to Watch finalist.

Aquaco Farms was founded by former commercial banker Joe Cardenas, who raised private funding to design, construct and open a 20,000-square-foot aquaculture facility on eight acres north of Fort Pierce in 2019. The farm is designed to sustainably produce 1 million pounds of pompano a year from just 100 fish caught in the wild. The company’s primary focus is wholesaling fresh, never-frozen pompano for delivery to commercial customers within 24 to 36 hours of harvest.

The GrowFL awards program honors impressive second-stage companies from throughout the state for developing valuable products and services, creating quality jobs, enriching communities, and broadening new industries throughout Florida.

Together, the 11th Annual GrowFL Florida Companies to Watch finalists represent nearly 2,300 jobs and generate over $499 million in revenue. These companies, all of which are “worth watching,” anticipate a growth of 64% in revenue and 39% in employment by the end of 2021.

"Recognition by GrowFL as a Companies to Watch finalist is a great validation for us at Aquaco. We headquartered our company in St. Lucie County four years ago and have continued to improve on our craft every day,” said Joe Cardenas, Aquaco Farms founder and CEO.

The finalists were selected from close to 300 nominations across the state and are now in the running to be named a GrowFL Florida Companies to Watch honoree.  If selected as an honoree, these exemplary second-stage companies will join the 500 second-stage companies across the state that have been recognized since 2011.

“We applaud these first-round finalists who have proved themselves to be stand out companies in the state. These business owners demonstrate the resiliency and tenacity that goes hand in hand with being an entrepreneur. There is no doubt these business owners have been challenged over the past year, but their perseverance and ability to innovate has been admirable. We are excited to again recognize the outstanding businesses who continue to make a significant impact on Florida’s economy,” said Tom O’Neal, Ph.D., GrowFL founder.

The 11th Annual GrowFL Florida Companies to Watch Awards celebration is made possible by Nperspective CFO & Strategic Services, in association with the Edward Lowe Foundation.

The honorees for this year’s award will be announced in October. The 11th Annual GrowFL Florida Companies to Watch awards celebration will take place on Feb. 17, 2022, at Hard Rock Live, Universal City Walk, Orlando.

Companies to Watch was developed by the Edward Lowe Foundation as a unique way to recognize and honor second-stage companies that demonstrate high performance in the marketplace with innovative strategies and processes. In addition to evaluating past growth and projected success, applicant companies are judged according to their special strengths and impact in their markets, communities and within the state – thus deeming them “worth watching.”

Treasure Coast Food Bank resumes Food for Thought Tours

Treasure Coast Food Bank resumes

Food for Thought Tours

TCFB Production Kitchen

Treasure Coast Food Bank relaunched its popular Food for Thought tour last month, hosting community leaders from St. Lucie County for a tour of its Food Production Kitchen.

The group got an up-close look at how the state-of-the-art operation converts fresh produce into thousands of meals, a collaboration that supports area farmers and growers while providing nutritious food to people who otherwise wouldn’t have access to it.

The Food Production Kitchen benefits area growers by providing them an additional outlet to sell produce and ensures that nutritious produce is available to the one-in-four individuals on the Treasure Coast who don’t always have access to nutritious food. It also serves as a training outlet for students in Treasure Coast Food Bank’s Culinary Training Program.

The group learned how the production kitchen can convert whole produce into pre-cut, refrigerated portions through its wash/chop/packaging system, enabling fresh, nutritious produce to go from fields to household refrigerators in a matter of days. During a crisis, the production kitchen can turn out 100,000 prepared meals, complete with lean protein, each day.

“Everything was designed to be multi-functional. We can reconfigure this equipment for meal prep for cold meals for students and seniors,” Cruz said, explaining how Treasure Coast Food Bank prepares meals for St. Lucie County’s schools and for the Summer Meals programs.

The Food Production Kitchen played a major role in feeding people throughout the state much of last year during the COVID-19 shutdown. Using its two large-capacity cooking kettles, Treasure Coast Food Bank took in thousands of pounds of produce and converted them to vegetable soup that was distributed to people in need throughout Florida. At full operation, the Food Production Kitchen can process more than 25 million pounds of fresh produce each year.

“Rather than let that produce go to waste, we made thousands of gallons of vegetable soup,” Cruz said. “What we do every day is package food,” she added. “We package it in cases, in Cryovacs, and in gallon bags, and it goes out in a variety of ways to those in need. Hunger never sleeps, and neither do we.”
