STUART – Martin Medical Center made national news over the weekend when patient Mary Ann Powell-Franco’s vision returned after being blind for over 20 years. Powell-Franco, who lost her sight in 1993 as a result of a car crash in Ohio. She’d needed spinal surgery to fix ruptured discs. She had a stroke on the operating table and her eyesight was completely diminished.

Powell-Franco recently re-injured her spine by falling and underwent neck surgery at Martin Medical Center in Stuart. When she woke from the surgery, she’d regained her vision. Dr. John Afshar theorizes that an artery could have been kinked during her earlier crash or surgery and when he realigned her spine, blood flow might have been reestablished to dormant nerve cells associated with vision.
