Treasure Coast extension makes space for food system connections Oct. 11

Treasure Coast extension makes space for food system connections Oct. 11

The Good Food Connections virtual meet up is back. Do you grow a food product you aren’t sure how to market or distribute?  Are you a chef looking to add unique local items to your menu?  Join us starting Tuesday, Oct.  11 from 5 – 6 p.m. via Zoom.

Good Food Connections meetings are free virtual networking events designed to give all participants of the food system, such as growers, distributors, retailers, food pantries, chefs, school food service and more, the opportunity to make connections that will strengthen our food system. Maybe someone needs your old equipment. Perhaps you can make a great food special with the last of someone’s harvest. Because we are virtual, the opportunity to connect regionally is better.

Each meeting will include a presentation from someone who is part of the food system. It is a chance to learn about their efforts and needs. Past meetings have led to less local food waste, increased food supplies for food banks and even the establishment of a food policy council in a nearby county.

Let the St. Lucie UF/IFAS Extension staff know if you’d like to present during a session about your operation. In the past, we’ve learned about the resources provided by the Treasure Coast Food Bank and House of Hope. We took a virtual tour of Colab Farms in Martin County. We would love to feature a local restaurant or food truck.

Please register in advance to receive the zoom link; there is no fee to participate.  All UF/IFAS Extension programs are open to all and the University of Florida is an Equal Opportunity Organization.  For more information about this event, contact Carol Roberts via email at [email protected] or call 772-462-1895 or co-organizer Yvette Goodiel at [email protected].

Sheryl Paul retires after 31 years at Helping People Succeed

Sheryl Paul retires after 31 years at Helping People Succeed

Sheryl Paul spent 31 years at Helping People Succeed, teaching countless families how to build meaningful connections with their young children and make the most out of those very important first years. She helped pioneer the BRAIN Program, taught countless hours of Infant Massage and helped new parents have “The Happiest Baby” long before the invention of the beloved Snoo. Some might say, Sheryl is kind of the Baby Whisperer of Martin County.

On Thursday, Sept. 15, Paul retired after more than three decades at the Treasure Coast nonprofit, where she put her distinct imprint on several programs.

Just six weeks after relocating to the Stuart area from Chicago with her husband Elliot and their three children, she started in the Developmental Intervention program of Helping People Succeed, which involved making weekly home visits to families with children from birth to the age of three whom had either diagnosed or at-risk developmental differences.

She remained in that job for eight years and then transitioned into the newly established BRAIN (Building Readiness Among Infants Now) Program, where she remained for 20 years. This program, which is funded through the Children’s Services Council, is available to all parents of newborns in Martin and St. Lucie counties and focuses on early brain development and how parents can give their babies the best possible start in life.

Sheryl said “I had the privilege of doing visits with the same families many times over the years and no two visits were ever the same because no two babies are ever the same. I like to believe that moms and dads took something different away with them each time we met.”

For the last three years, she’s been the sole facilitator of the Wee Talk program, training key staff at local nonprofits such as WIC, Healthy Start of Martin County, Martin County Library System and the other departments at Helping People Succeed on the connection between language and literacy, and the importance of passing that message on to all the families they interact with.

When Sheryl first moved to Martin County, she could never have predicted that that change would lead her to a job that would give her personal fulfillment as well as co-workers who turned into friends and now, 30 years later, feel like family. “My life has been so richly blessed by the work I have gotten to do and the people I have gotten to do it with,” Sheryl says.

Now the proud and doting grandmother to six (almost seven) grandchildren, all of whom live locally, Paul says the time is right to move to the next phase in her life, spending as much time with them as possible.

She says, “My treasured time is time in the car with my grandkids. My family is precious to me and I look forward to being with them. I have had a beautiful journey with Helping People Succeed and I will carry the memories with me as I move on to my next chapter.”

Bank of America payments and spending data shows continued small business resiliency

Bank of America payments and spending data shows continued small business resiliency

Small business payments per client increased 11% year over year in August; Card spending per client increased 13% year over year

The Bank of America Institute released a new publication which finds continued resilience in small businesses. New Bank of America small business data shows that, despite economic headwinds, small businesses continue to strengthen in a variety of areas, including credit and debit card spending, business travel expenditures and payroll payments. Overall small business payments per client increased 11% year over year in August, up from 3% year over year in the prior month. Card spending per client increased 13% year over year last month, outpacing July’s 7% growth rate.

One important reason for the continued resiliency in small businesses is the return of business travel. According to the US Travel Association, business travel accounted for more than a quarter of total travel spending in the US prior to the pandemic. Bank of America internal data indicates that the number of travel transactions per small business client is at 90% of the 2019 annual average, the highest level since the pandemic began. This includes airlines, lodging, cruise lines, travel agency, car rental and other transportation. Furthermore, small business card spending per client for travel increased 31% year over year in August, up from 19% in July.

Small businesses also continue to see strength in payroll payments. The average overall payroll spend per client was up 11% year over year in July on a 3-month rolling average, suggesting robust hiring and wage growth momentum. Restaurant and bar payroll payments are easing from recent highs, down to a still resilient 18% year over year in August.

Other highlights of the publication include:

  • Small business card spending varied greatly across annual income tiers, and small businesses with greater annual revenues spent at a faster pace than those with lower annual revenues.
  • For small businesses with annual sales revenue higher than $1 million, card spending per client for travel was up the most, at 43% year over year in August. This increase was partially due to a reversal of the depressed levels of spending on business travel last August due to the spread of the Delta variant.
  • After-tax wages based on the internal Bank of America consumer deposit data for small business clients were up 6.1% year over year on a 3-month rolling basis in August (for more please see our latest Consumer Checkpoint). This outpaces data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, which finds that average hourly earnings for August increased by 5.2% year-over-year.

“Despite economic headwinds like high inflation, small businesses are heading into the fall with cautious optimism,” said Anna Zhou, economist for the Bank of America Institute. “We see things like the rebound in small business travel and resilience in payroll payments as further evidence the economy is getting back on track.”

Small Business Checkpoint

Small Business Checkpoint is a regular publication from the Bank of America Institute. Glow in the Dark will benefit EFMC

Glow in the Dark will benefit EFMC

Jeanine Bushman, 2021 South Fork High School Teacher of the Year

What began as a 2020 fundraiser that could satisfy social distancing needs during the pandemic’s early stages while raising much-needed funds for one of the Treasure Coast’s most esteemed nonprofits has returned.

On Saturday, Oct. 1, Glow in the Dark will take place at Hammock Creek Golf Club in Palm City to benefit Education Foundation of Martin County.

This fun-filled nine-hole golf tournament kicks off at 4:30 p.m. with registration and cocktails. A shotgun start with a scramble format will follow.

Scheduled ending time is 8:30 p.m.

Roaming beverage carts will dot the greens and food stations will be featured throughout the course, allowing players to stop for a bite in between holes.

Entry fee for individual golfers is $250 and premium team foursomes are $1,000. Love a great party but don’t want to golf?  Consider purchasing a foursome for your favorite school or district level staff, becoming a sponsor, or registering as an attendee.  Hacker attendee entrance is $100 per person and allows you to be part of the festivities as you eat and drink your way around the course in support of Martin County’s students and teachers.

All Martin County School Teachers of the Year will be on hand, sporting around in school spirit-themed carts.  A cash grant will be awarded to the cart/team showing the most spirit.  Help make it happen by purchasing a $250 cart sponsorship for your favorite school.

The winning foursome will take away a trophy and a complimentary golf foursome at one of our local premier courses.  The last place team will also take home a one-of-a-kind prize.

A $10,000 Hole-in-One prize sponsored by MIDFLORIDA Credit Union is up for grabs.

Sponsorship opportunities costing from $250-$3,500 are available. Benefits vary and can include a premium team foursome, decorated golf carts, photo opps, event signage, social media posts, logo inclusion on the EFMC website and email news blasts and more

For information about Glow in the Dark or questions about sponsorships, visit www.EducationFoundationMC.org or contact Lisa Rhodes, Executive Director, at 772-600-8062 or [email protected].

Sunshine Kitchen partners with Florida Small Business Development Center at IRSC

Sunshine Kitchen partners with Florida Small Business Development Center at IRSC

Florida's Small Business Development Center

The National Restaurant Association estimates that one in three restaurants won’t survive their first year in business. To combat that static, St. Lucie County’s Sunshine Kitchen is partnering with Indian River State College’s Small Business Development Center to provide free consultation to clients at the kitchen.

Starting in October, the Small Business Development Center will have a full-time consultant located at the Sunshine Kitchen to provide advice and direction to small business owners and would-be entrepreneurs on topics such as creating marketing plans, developing new clients and navigating local, state and federal regulations. The consultant will also present group training programs on a variety of business-related topics that meet the needs of local businesses as well as conducting outreach activities to local trade groups and associations.

Located at 7550 Pruitt Research Center Road in Fort Pierce, the Sunshine Kitchen is a 10,000-square-foot commercial kitchen facility designed to offer culinary entrepreneurs the space to grow their business. For more information, visit: www.sunshinekitchenslc.com.
