Wednesdays at Big Apple Pizza in Fort Pierce and Port St. Lucie were once so slow, owner Scott Van Duzer didn’t even go into work, according to Rick Hynum of PMQ Magazine. Now the Port St. Lucie, Florida, restaurateur doesn’t dare stay home—that midweek night’s a “monster,” he said, thanks to a children’s literacy program he implemented two years ago: Read to Succeed.

Lee Dobbins honored with Pete Hegener Leadership Award

Lee Dobbins, shareholder at Dean, Mean, Minton and Moore, was honored with the prestigious Pete Hegener Leadership Award by the Economic Development Council of St. Lucie County (EDC) at its 11th annual leadership dinner on May 8. The award is presented annually to a dedicated business leader who has made significant contributions to St. Lucie County’s economy and quality of life. The annual dinner and celebration, held at the Harbour Ridge Yacht & Country Club and attended by more than 230 business leaders, was sponsored by Bank of America.

Center for Calling & Career to equip high school students for purpose-driven futures

Master’s Academy of Vero Beach announced the launch of its Center for Calling & Career (CCC), a visionary initiative designed to provide academic, career, and spiritual guidance to high school students as they navigate critical decisions about their futures. The center will be led by Jenny Sutter, recently appointed as the Director. With over a decade of experience in education and a Master of Science in Montessori Education with a focus on educational leadership, Sutter brings both passion and expertise to her new role.

The City of Fort Pierce Grants Administration Division announced a new series of free community workshops designed to empower, educate, and support residents on essential topics that impact everyday life. The workshops will be held at the River Walk Center, located at 600 N. Indian River Dr., Fort Pierce, from 5:30 PM to 6:30 PM.

The A.E. Backus Museum & Gallery announced works that have been accepted into the 30th Through the Eye of the Camera Annual Juried Photography Exhibition. The exhibition will be on view to the public May 9 through June 20, at 500 N. Indian River Dr. in Historic Downtown Fort Pierce. The Members Opening Reception for the exhibition is on Friday, May 9 from 6 - 8  p.m., with welcome and remarks at 6:30 pm. Members are admitted free; Not-yet members are $20. (All artists who participated in the competition are welcome to attend with one guest.)
