Tradition Medical Center to double in size
PORT ST. LUCIE — Martin Health System officials have announced plans to double the size of Tradition Medical Center.
Martin Health will add 170,000 square feet and three stories to the facility. When completed in 2018, Tradition Medical Center will have a total of nine stories and 90 new patient rooms. The expansion is expected to add 500 jobs.
Three St. Lucie County attractions were awarded the 2015 Certificate of Excellence from TripAdvisor — an online directory that provides reviews and advice on tourism amenities such as hotels, museums, parks, resorts, attractions and more. The St. Lucie County Aquarium, featuring the Smithsonian Marine Eco-System Exhibit, the St. Lucie County Regional History Center and Pepper Park and were all 2015 Certificate of Excellence winners.
VERO BEACH — Florida Eye Institute welcomes Dr. Chris Shumake, who is seeing patients in Vero Beach and Sebastian locations.
Dr. Shumake is fellowship trained in corneal disease and surgery from Duke University. He specializes in the personalized treatment of corneal disorders and offers a wide variety of surgical and laser consultations, including corneal transplants, astigmatism correction and premium lens cataract surgery.
Harbor Branch adds faculty member
FORT PIERCE — FAU Harbor Branch has added Jim Sullivan, Ph.D, to its staff. He is a biological oceanographer with specializations in phytoplankton physiology/ecology and harmful algal blooms and has interests in ocean optics, remote sensing, bioluminescence and oceanographic instrument development.

STUART — For the sixth year in a row, SafeSpace will host Walk A Mile In Her Shoes to bring greater awareness about the issue of domestic violence. This year SafeSpace is calling on local “superheroes” to stand up against domestic violence.
The event is planned for 9 a.m. Oct. 10 at Marina Square in downtown Fort Pierce. Hundreds of people will once again gather at the annual one-mile walk, donning red stilettos in a symbolic representation of the proverbial meaning behind the event’s name.
