VERO BEACH — Indian River Charter High School is proud to announce that Cynthia Aversa, Director of Indian River Charter High School, has been awarded a 2018 Charter School Champion Pioneer Award by the Florida Consortium of Public Charter Schools.

The Charter School Pioneer Award, the Consortium’s highest award, is designed to recognize the contribution of individuals who have played a pioneering role in the charter school movement or an individual charter school in Florida. Only five pioneer awards were given to Charter School leaders throughout the state of Florida.

“She was chosen to receive the Pioneer award instead of the Charter School Champion award for the important work she has done for the charter school movement as a whole over the years,” said Amy McClellan, Special Program Consultant for Florida Consortium of Public Charter Schools.

The award was given at the Charter School Champions Reception and Awards Ceremony on Wednesday, October 17, at the Caribe Royale in Orlando, FL. Teachers and staff members from IRCHS surprised Ms. Aversa at the awards ceremony in Orlando.

Cynthia Aversa became Director of the Indian River Charter High School on July 1, 2002 when the school was home to 276 students and 61 faculty and staff. Today, the school supports 721 students and the same level of 61 faculty and staff.

“Ms. Aversa’s exceptional and constant leadership, ability to anticipate issues, creative problem solving and skill at attracting and selecting outstanding staff are just a few of her outstanding qualities. Her calm and professional approach to solving issues, both with the school district and DOE, have enabled the school to continue on an even keel. Ms. Aversa is held in highest regard within the local community, by parents, students, staff and the Board of Directors. She is truly the driving force in the success of Indian River Charter High School,” said Joan Johnson, Board Member for Indian River Charter High School.

Alongside her, local Charter School leader at Sebastian Charter Junior High, Amy Banov, was also awarded as Champion Governing Board Member.
