Florida SBDC IRSC teaches Financial Literacy to IRC Business Owners & Operators


The Florida Small Business Development Center (SBDC) at Indian River State College (IRSC) will hold another round of Financial Training, formally known as Profit Mastery, on the IRSC Mueller Campus in Vero Beach starting Wednesday, April 6, 2022 from 8 to 11 a.m.

This program runs six weeks and is offered to the public at no cost. Bank of America has graciously partnered with the Florida SBDC Network to scholarship financial training and management across the Treasure Coast region. Valued at $499, the Florida SBDC at IRSC is encouraging business owners to register not only themselves but their bookkeepers, payroll executives, and others who may benefit from strengthening their budgetary knowledge.

Business owners, key managers, entrepreneurs, business advisors and others whose decisions have an impact on a company’s financial performance should consider participating. The Profit Mastery program is designed to enhance the financial management skills of all business managers.


The Indian River County program runs the following dates and times:

Once registered, participants are required to attend 5 out of 6 trainings in order to graduate from the program.

Steve LeFever, Founder, and Chairman of Profit Mastery is a national leader in the development of practical financial programs and training for the independent business community. His dual role as a successful entrepreneur and as a commercial banker gives him a unique perspective on financial analysis, business management, and practical business decisions.

Sessions held in Vero Beach are facilitated by FSBDC at IRSC business analyst, Frank Fink. Frank began his 48- year career in finance and operations management serving with the United States Air Force as an auditor. Following his military service, Frank began his corporate work with Florida Power & Light in their nuclear power division. After 24 years with FP&L, Frank went on to serve with other energy companies, in their nuclear divisions, including the Tennessee Valley Authority, Commonwealth Edison, and Exelon Energy. Throughout his career, Frank served in numerous financial and operations management positions, where his responsibilities included: business planning, accounting, and financial control functions, business operations, strategic planning, supply chain management, information systems management, project management, estimating, and scheduling. Bank of America Awards $250,000 Grant to Indian River State College


BOA LogoBank of America announced a $250,000 grant to Indian River State College (IRSC) in support of the development and programming at IRSC’s Eastman Advanced Workforce Training Complex. The purpose-built facility, scheduled for a 2023 opening, will link advanced technology and leading-edge industry training in specialized technical career fields, such as advanced manufacturing, automotive, aviation and marine technology, welding, and more.
Since 1960, IRSC has offered high-skill and career-training programs to meet the ever-changing workforce needs of Indian River, Martin, Okeechobee and St. Lucie counties. IRSC's programs nurture industrial advancement while extending long-term economic opportunity to Treasure Coast residents by creating a dynamic workforce pipeline designed to propel regional growth and support business expansion. The state-of-the-art, 60,000-square-foot facility will be equipped with the technology and tools needed to prepare local students for high-demand, high-paying jobs.
“Bank of America’s investment in Indian River State College will establish the Bank of America Welding—Metal Joining Lab, a critical component of the forthcoming Eastman Advanced Workforce Training Complex,” says Michael Hageloh, interim vice president for Advancement. “The grant will help IRSC transform and expand the learning environment for our students by providing the latest technology—updated equipment, virtual reality welding machines, and more—to develop their skills and become workforce ready.”

Bloomberg Terminals come to IRSC

IRSC Business and Finance Students Gain Edge with Addition of Bloomberg Terminals


Students studying at Indian River State College now have access to the platform used by the world’s leading banks, corporations and government agencies to view real-time global financial data, news feeds and messages. The College has installed 12 Bloomberg Terminals, providing students with unparalleled coverage of markets and securities with information across asset classes—from fixed income to equities, foreign exchange, commodities and derivatives.

IRSC’s implementation of the Bloomberg Terminals brings the real world of business and finance into the classroom. IRSC is one of more than 1,000 academic institutions globally—but the only one on Florida’s Treasure Coast—to integrate Bloomberg into the curriculum for its business and finance degree programs. The new IRSC Bloomberg Financial Lab will also be used for financial literacy programs and Bloomberg certification courses, which the College expects to begin later this year.

“The opportunity to bring Bloomberg to our students provides an unparalleled resource in developing valuable financial and analytic skills that will differentiate and improve their competitiveness in the job market,” explains Dr. Prashanth Pilly, Dean of the IRSC Business Division. “Integrating classroom teaching with the real-world data, news and analytics available on the Terminal better prepares our students for futures in the business and finance industries.”

IRSC’s subscriptions to the Bloomberg Terminal will serve as a resource for both students and professors. It will enable students to become familiar with tools used in financial services, reinforcing classroom theory, while professors can use it to further their research.

“When a student comes to IRSC, they can expect a best-in-class education, and our Bloomberg Finance Lab is another example of the outstanding resources that are freely available to them,” shares IRSC President Dr. Timothy Moore. “At IRSC, students from every academic discipline have the opportunity to sharpen their financial literacy to help them succeed personally and professionally.”

Students of varying levels and study areas can familiarize themselves with the fundamentals of finance through the lens of the Terminal by taking Bloomberg Market Concepts (BMC). Upon completing BMC’s Core Concepts modules, learners receive a certificate of completion that can be added to their LinkedIn profiles and resumes to show their knowledge of both the markets and the Terminal.

A ribbon-cutting for the new Bloomberg Finance Lab is scheduled for Wednesday, February 23, at 10:00 a.m. in the Brown Center for Innovation & Entrepreneurship.

New Opportunities, Greater Access for Indian River State College Students and Community

One year ago, author and philanthropist MacKenzie Scott pledged $45 million to Indian River State College (IRSC), the largest individual donation in the College’s 60-year history. The gift came without prescription—Scott writes on her blog “we believe that teams with experience on the front lines of challenges will know best how to put the money to good use, we encouraged them to spend it however they choose”—but with great responsibility.

The gift was made as part of the Giving Pledge, Scott’s commitment to give the majority of her wealth to address some of society’s most pressing problems. In 2020, IRSC was among 384 organizations that Scott made large gifts to after her team of advisors considered some 6,500 organizations along with data analysis on community needs, program outcomes, and each non-profit’s capacity to absorb and make effective use of funding. Donations were focused on those “operating in communities facing high projected food insecurity, high measures of racial inequity, high local poverty rates, and low access to philanthropic capital” and given “with full trust and no strings attached.”

IRSC announced news of the gift at its Fall Commencement ceremony on December 16, 2020, reaffirming the College’s critical mission and the commitment of its newly appointed President to redefine and reframe the narrative on how American community colleges can better serve its constituencies. On December 17, the College began its next chapter—to profoundly bolster its efforts to change lives.

“Our mission is to take students from any part of society and find ways to help them achieve their full potential,” said IRSC President Dr. Timothy Moore. “Ms. Scott has provided IRSC with a uniquely transformative opportunity to accelerate our ability to make post-secondary education attainable for citizens of our region, regardless of their circumstance or

background. She has changed the trajectory for IRSC, and we in turn will change the trajectory for our students and our community.”

True North—Mission, Students and Community IRSC is the only open-access, public institution of higher education in the four-county (Indian River, Martin, Okeechobee, St. Lucie) service district. Its student body is more diverse than America, with the majority, 53.5%, comprised of minority students. Thirty-seven percent (37%) of IRSC students are first-generation students, and 40.1% of students receive a Pell grant. Most of IRSC’s students (71.8%) are enrolled part-time and female students make up the majority (61.4%) of enrollment.

It is IRSC’s mission to transform lives by offering high-quality, affordable and accessible education.

Guided by its True North— Mission, Students and Community—the College has embarked on the first of a series of strategic initiatives aimed to provide economic uplift to historically underrepresented populations; meet the increasing demand for trained, diverse workforces; advance student success and well-being; invest in future generations; and develop critical partnerships that bring new opportunities and ideas to our students, region and nation.

In pursuit of those goals, the College is deploying $24 million dollars of the donation, which is about 53% of the total gift.

Building a workforce for the future On December 14, 2021, exactly one year after receiving Scott’s gift, IRSC, along with area hospital leaders, announced that the College would double the size of its Nursing program to address the critical need for more nurses in Florida. Funds will be used to transform 50,521 sq. ft. at IRSC’s Pruitt Campus in Port St. Lucie into state-of-the-art nursing classrooms and simulated clinical settings. It would also create new pathways for students who earned Certified Nursing Assistant (C.N.A.), Emergency Medical Technician (E.M.T.) or other allied health certificates, offering them credit for prior learning when entering the Associate Degree in Nursing (R.N.) program. This exclusive pathway program reduces students’ time to degree completion and costs, while adding diversity to the nursing class by prioritizing field experience and prior learning in the application process. Roughly $13.5 million will support this largest program expansion in IRSC history.

Economic uplift IRSC is moving with great velocity to support initiatives that support access and outreach to low-income, first-generation and historically underrepresented populations. To that end, a portion of the funds from the Scott gift will be used to create an endowment that builds on the success of the Lincoln Park Career Pathways Initiative (LPCPI). The program, centered at the Blackburn Educational Building in Fort Pierce’s majority Black, economically challenged Lincoln Park community, provides funding for tuition, transportation, and other support service for students receiving college credit or non-credit coursework that leads to an industry certification and ultimately to a good-paying job. To date, 71% of program completers have received credentials and are now working in industry-related jobs. The new endowment will fund tuition and provide emergency support for transportation, child care or other financial needs to dramatically expand access to this life-changing program. One million dollars is committed to this endeavor.

Advancing student success and well-being During the pandemic, IRSC learned a great deal about new challenges students face. Students reported that they often do not have quiet places to study or reliable internet connections. They have missed the opportunity to study and interact with peers and classmates. As a result, IRSC is re-imagining student learning and social spaces, tools, academic support and more to advance student success, well-being and sense of belonging, which are essential elements of student retention.

IRSC is deploying $1 million dollars to develop a welcoming Student Learning Commons on its main campus in Fort Pierce. Located in the library, the Student Learning Commons will be a supportive and nurturing place for students to meet, study, and relax. Study skills are the most difficult to develop, and peer-to-peer tutors—prominent in the Learning Commons—are the most efficient way to assist students with learning. IRSC intends to duplicate a Student Learning Commons at each branch campus, furthering the reach of study services to all students.

Investing in future generations IRSC understands that high-quality pre-school is the essential difference maker in the success of a child. The College intends to allocate $2.5 million in its Child Development Center. The Child Development Center provides quality, low-cost education and care for the children of our students, community members and faculty. It also provides hands-on learning experiences for students enrolled in IRSC Early Childhood Education programs.

Developing critical partnerships An indirect effect of the gift includes increased passion, energy, and visibility of IRSC and its mission. Such attention has enabled IRSC to develop unique, groundbreaking partnerships with Adobe, Bloomberg, and Wolfram Researchto name a few. These partnerships have resulted in student, faculty and staff access to best-in-class research and technical software tools at no cost to them. No other community college in America offers these elite tools for free. As a result of these partnerships, IRSC students are uniquely poised for success in the classroom and gain a competitive edge for the modern workplace.

The multiplier effect Scott writes in her blog: “We chose to make relatively large gifts to the organizations…both to enable their work, and as a signal of trust and encouragement, to them and to others.” IRSC has seen and will continue to see the direct effect of this generosity.

Recently, the College received two large restricted gifts. The first is a $2 million naming gift for the Eastman Advanced Workforce Training Complex, a purpose-built facility that will link advanced technology and leading-edge industry training in specialized technical career fields. The Complex, set to open in 2023, is cited as critical for closing the regional skills gap and preparing residents for high-wage, in-demand careers. The next is a $10 million restricted gift to develop and build a first-of-its-kind vocational charter high school in Indiantown, Florida, a rural majority Hispanic community. The new high school will be home to more than 400 students. Details about that project are forthcoming.

New Scholarship to Remove Financial Barriers for Black Students Seeking Associate Degrees

Indian River State College (IRSC) has received an $800,000 award from Florida Power & Light Company (FPL) to support diversity in STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) careers. The funds will establish the Florida Power & Light Company Endowed Scholarship for Black students seeking Associate in Science degrees at IRSC in the areas of Electrical Power Technology (ICE specialization), Computer Information Technology and Electronics Engineering Technology (such as robotics-manufacturing and laser-photonics specializations).  
FPL will fund the endowed scholarship over four years; $200,000 is available for the 2022–2023 academic year. Scholarship funds may cover tuition, books, and supplies or be used to enroll in courses that provide additional certifications such as OSHA or CPR while attending IRSC. New and returning IRSC students may begin applying for the awards now by logging into their MyPioneerPortal account. 
“IRSC’s longstanding partnership with Florida Power & Light centers around making a positive impact on people’s lives,” says Michael Hageloh, IRSC interim vice president for institutional advancement. “Over the years, we have collaborated on programs that build essential workforce skills and put students into great paying jobs. FPL’s most recent commitment moves us closer to achieving another mutual goal—addressing racial opportunity gaps in STEM fields—and for that, we are immensely grateful.” 
According to an April 2021 report from the Pew Research Center, Black workers comprise 11% of all employed adults but account for only 9% of adults employed in STEM occupations. Their share is lower in some STEM job clusters, including just 5% in engineering jobs. Further, Pew states that there has been no change in the share of Black workers in STEM jobs since 2016.  
FPL’s commitment to IRSC will help remove financial barriers that may prevent Black students from entering these fields. 
“We are focused on breaking down barriers to opportunity by investing in STEM programs that empower our next generation of leaders. We are proud to energize IRSC’s dynamic STEM initiatives and provide support for students with this grant,” said Pamela Rauch, vice president of external affairs and economic development for FPL. “The Florida Power & Light Company Endowed Scholarship for Black students will help inspire these innovators to obtain an Associate of Science degree—a strong foundation for landing a high-paying job in the technology field.”  
The Florida Power & Light Company Endowed Scholarship is the most recent example of IRSC’s steadfastness to finding ways to remove barriers and support student diversity in STEM subjects. In September, the College announced a $4.9 million Hispanic-Serving Institutions STEM and Articulation Program grant from the U.S. Department of Education to increase the number of Hispanic and low-income students in STEM disciplines. These opportunities, combined with integrated academic and student support strategies and activities that promote retention and graduation, will help the IRSC increase the number of undergraduates from underrepresented groups who successfully complete STEM studies.

On Friday, December 3, Governor Ron DeSantis announced the appointment of two Indian River State College alumni as the newest members of the College’s District Board of Trustees: Melissa Kindell, D.D.S., Owner of Everglades Pediatric Dentistry in Okeechobee, and Indian River County Sheriff Chief Deputy Milo Thornton.  Susan R. Caron (St. Lucie County), José L. Conrado (Indian River County) and Anthony D. George Jr. (Martin County), who serves as vice-chair for the board, were reappointed to another term.

“The individuals who serve on the Indian River State College District Board of Trustees comprise the most dedicated, thoughtful and visionary governing body on any institution of higher education anywhere, “ exclaims IRSC President Dr. Timothy Moore. “Governor DeSantis’ confidence in our mission is evident by these appointments. We are grateful for his support and look forward to realizing the Administration’s goal of Florida being number one in workforce education by 2030.”

Dr. Melissa Kindell, a pediatric dentist and Owner of Everglades Pediatric Dentistry, was born and raised in Okeechobee, Florida. After earning an Associate Degree at Indian River State College, she attended the University of Florida, where she received both a Bachelor of Science Degree in Microbiology and a Doctorate of Dental Medicine. Kindell is President of the Board at Martha’s House and serves on the Executive Board of the Economic Council of Okeechobee. She and her husband, Eric, reside in Okeechobee with their two boys.

Milo Thornton, Deputy Chief, Indian River County Sheriff’s Office, is an alumnus of IRSC—earning both his Associate in Science and Bachelor’s degrees in Criminal Justice from the College.  For the past 15 years, Thornton has also served as an Adjunct Instructor at the IRSC Treasure Coast Public Safety Training Complex.  He is an active member of the Gifford Youth Achievement Center, New Horizons of the Treasure Coast, Crossover Mission, Sunrise Rotary, Head Start, Dodgertown Elementary Community Partnership and Substance Awareness Center of Indian River County.

Susan Caron of Fort Pierce has served on the IRSC District Board of Trustees since 2012. She is an administrative assistant for the St. Lucie County Board of County Commissioners. Caron was the owner and vice president of Robert M. Caron Construction Inc. She is a current member of the Association of Community College Trustees and previously served on the Treasure Coast Regional Planning Council.

José L. Conrado of Vero Beach, is the President of Conrado Enterprises. He is a former Chair of the IRSC District Board of Trustees and the Indian River State College Foundation. In 2020, he was recognized as Trustee of the Year by the Association of Florida Colleges. Conrado’s other community involvement includes active roles with Take Stock in Children, Habitat for Humanity, the American Red Cross, March of Dimes, the Rotary Club, and the Hibiscus Children’s Center. Conrado earned his Associate Degree from Indian River State College and was recognized with the IRSC Distinguished Alumni Award.

Attorney Anthony D. George Jr. has been a Florida Bar member since 1989. He owns a Stuart-based law practice focusing on elder law. Tony was first appointed to the Indian River State College District Board of Trustees in 2014 and presently serves as Vice-Chair. In high school, he took classes at Indian River Community College.  Tony earned his Bachelor’s Degree in Liberal Arts and Sciences from the University of Florida and his Juris Doctorate from the University of Florida Fredric G. Levin College of Law.  In their spare time, Tony and his wife Deby try to keep up with their five children.

The nine-member board is comprised of members from each of the four counties in the IRSC service district—St. Lucie, Indian River, Martin, and Okeechobee—and establishes the policies that govern the operation of the College. Other members include Chairperson Sandra J. Krischke (St. Lucie County), Vicki Davis (Martin County), Christa Luna (Okeechobee County), and Brant Schirard Jr. (St. Lucie County).

The National Association for Community College Entrepreneurship (NACCE) in partnership with Intuit is pleased to announce the acceptance of fourteen colleges into their newly launched Ambassadors Program. Selected educators will support and champion the Financial Management for Entrepreneurs (FMFE) initiative, as well as Intuit’s Design for Delight, which utilizes design thinking methodology to teach students how to approach critical problem-solving.“The FMFE curriculum stands ready to make a tremendous impact nationally with fifty community colleges and HBCUs adopting it and another fifty NACCE members becoming Innovation Catalysts,” said Dr. Rebecca Corbin, president, and CEO of NACCE.

The FMFE initiative started in the fall of 2018 with the ultimate goal of empowering future entrepreneurs with the right financial management tools and skills required for long-term business success. Since its inception, NACCE and Intuit have reached over 750 for-credit and non-credit students with this turnkey, modular curriculum. Over 70% of students who completed the post-tests shared that they felt confident in their ability to manage business finances and over 85% felt confident in their ability to manage their personal finances.

In 2020, NACCE and Intuit partnered to train educators on how Design for Delight can be used to identify unsolved problems, gain empathy, run rapid experiments with actual customers, test assumptions, and iterate along the way. NACCE and Intuit hosted two pieces of training, co-developed an Intuit Design Thinking Innovator digital badge, and reached over 300 educators and more than 1,000 students.

There’s a critical need for more nurses in Florida. According to the Florida Hospital Association, by 2035, the state will have 59,100 fewer nurses than it requires. In direct response to this workforce crisis, on Tuesday, December 14, Indian River State College will announce plans to double the number of graduates in its nursing programs and launch the construction phase of a project that moves the IRSC School of Nursing to its Pruitt Campus in Port St. Lucie by Fall 2022.

The public is invited to attend the event on IRSC’s Pruitt Campus (500 N.W. California Blvd.) at 10:00 a.m. The event site, Building G, is one of two structures slated for complete re-imagination as IRSC works with Harvard Jolly Architecture—one of the largest firms in Florida with expertise in healthcare architecture and interior design—to transform the buildings into state-of-the-art nursing classrooms and simulated clinical settings. Proctor Construction, the firm responsible for the new Advanced Workforce Training Complex and multiple IRSC renovation projects, will construct the new home for the School of Nursing.

“Graduates of the IRSC Nursing program have always been highly sought-after,” states Dr. Timothy Moore, IRSC President. “Not a week goes by where at least one local healthcare facility reaches out to our School of Nursing to connect with alumni or soon-to-be graduates. By expanding our Nursing program and investing in these modern facilities, we can be even more responsive to our partners’ workforce needs.”

IRSC Associate Degree and R.N. to B.S.N. Nursing programs are nationally accredited, and students train to local and state clinical requirements. Licensure and certification rates for IRSC Associate Degree in Nursing students are consistently above state and national levels. Over the past three years, the average employment rate for IRSC A.D.N. graduates averaged 99%.

The December 14 event will feature renderings of the facilities, nursing simulations, a meet-and-greet with IRSC nursing students and faculty, and addresses from Nancy Hilton, M.N., R.N., NEA-BC, Chief Nursing Officer, St. Lucie Medical Center; Robert Lord Jr., President, Cleveland Clinic Martin Health; and Dr. Timothy Moore, President, Indian River State College.

USA Diving and Indian River State College recently formed a partnership to develop facilities and resources to support athlete and coach development in the United States. USA Diving recently announced during its Olympic team trials in Indianapolis that it is moving its executive offices to Indian River State College’s main campus in Fort Pierce.

The college and diving organization plan to develop facilities and resources to support athlete and coach development and the growth of diving in the United States. The partnership greatly expands the ability for the national governing body to deliver on its mission to champion, support and grow the sport of diving in the United States and support USAD athletes in achieving excellence in diving and beyond.

USA Diving and IRSC logosUnder the agreement, funds will be raised jointly to construct a world-class, international diving facility on IRSC’s main campus; create a coach development center to serve as USA Diving’s centralized educational platform for the systematic development of all levels of USAD coaches, divers and judges; develop state-of-the-art training facilities where USAD athletes, coaches and personnel can improve their performance through access to enhanced data-driven technologies; and fully leverage the commitment of both the college and USAD to expand diversity and inclusivity in the sport.

IRSC holds the longest unbroken U.S. winning streak in any sport at the collegiate level with 47 consecutive National Junior College Athletic Association men’s swimming and diving titles and 39 consecutive NJCAA women’s swimming and diving titles [43 overall women’s titles]. The college’s five campuses serve more than 26,000 students annually. In support of its mission to make education broadly accessible, IRSC received a $45 million gift in December from philanthropist MacKenzie Scott.
