Dancing with the Martin Stars on September 23

Dancing with the Martin Stars on September 23

Tangos, sambas and waltzes will take center stage at the Lyric Theatre on September 23 as the 2023 Dancing with the Martin Stars competition thrills the audience with fancy footwork.

Dancing with the Martin Stars is now in its 12th year of supporting the Martin County Healthy Start Coalition and its mission to ensure that every baby in our community is born healthy, every mother receives support, and every father is involved.

The competition pits teams of local dance instructors with volunteer “celebrities” from the community. The volunteers learn intricate dance steps for the performance in the hope of winning the grand prize - bragging rights and their own mirror ball trophy. They also compete in raising funds from friends, neighbors and local businesses to benefit Martin County Healthy Start Coalition.

“Dancing with the Martin Stars is always a fun event,” says Martin County Healthy Start CEO Samantha Suffich. “The purpose, though, is very serious. The funds our volunteers raise help us with our many programs that provide prenatal care to expectant mothers and then follow through to be sure that babies are born healthy and receive the services the family needs for a successful future.”

This year’s Martin Stars are: Carol Briseno, Recreation Coordinator with Martin County Parks & Recreations, dancing with Jang Don; Nikki Leserra , Creative Director at Sky is the Limit, dancing with Brian Spector; Jacilyn Mikels,  Aesthetic Nurse Practitioner at Jeunenu Aesthetics, dancing with Michael Chaves; Monique Robbins, Prevention Coordinator with Tykes & Teens, dancing with Yusell Garcia; Joan Goodrich, Executive Director of the Business Development Board of Martin County, dancing with Craig Galvin; Dr. Kurt Barnhill, Chiropractor at Precision Chiropractor and Rehab, dancing with Daisy Krakowiak-Wiebe;  Dr. Edward Savage, Cardiothoracic Surgeon of Cleveland Clinic Martin Health, dancing with Tanya Chaves; Noel Thomas, CEO of Zero Trafficking, dancing with Cheri Shanti; and Tony George, Attorney at Law, dancing with Marianella Tobar.

Community members can support a favorite dancer through the Martin County Healthy Start website, www.mchealthystart.com. Tickets to the event, which begins at 7 p.m. on Saturday, September 23, are available through the Lyric Theatre box office.

LiveStream tickets for those who can’t attend in person are on sale at https://www.mchealthystart.org/dancing-with-the-martin-stars/2023-livestream-tickets/, or people can watch the live broadcast at Hudson’s in Stuart.

A Sponsors Only cocktail party will be held before the dance competition begins. Casco Companies is the evening’s title sponsor and encourages individuals and organizations to join them at sponsorship levels ranging from $500 to $10,000.

Exciting spring for Environmental Studies Council

Exciting spring for Environmental Studies Council

Knight Kiplinger, Courtney Stein, Jesse Stein, Ellice Condon and Bobby Condon

It’s been a spectacular two months at the Environmental Studies Center, thanks to the hard work of the 501(c)(3) that supports it, the Environmental Studies Council. On March 29, the Council learned that it was awarded a $100,000 grant from Impact100 Martin for its Wet Lab Revitalization. Then, on April 1, months of hard work culminated in a successful gala that celebrated the Center’s 50th anniversary and netted over $110,000.

Key sponsors included Ann & Knight Kiplinger, M.E.’s Team, Seacoast Bank, FPL and Kay Sutton. The 140 attendees enjoyed a buffet dinner, tours of the Bay Tree Lodge property in Sewall’s Point, music, and live and silent auctions

Proceeds will be used to fund capital improvements including the Wet Lab Revitalization, as well as assist with the Council’s regular expenses of a teacher’s salary, community education and outreach, and boat-related expenses.

Habitat welcomes new development and marketing director

Habitat welcomes new development and marketing director

St. Lucie Habitat for Humanity is excited to welcome new Development and Marketing Director, Chris Robertson, to its team. He brings a depth of experience and a broad range of skills to the organization.

His strong sense of community and respect for the dedication and work of local non-profit organizations led him to volunteering and lending a hand to those most in need. Volunteerism is, to this day, an essential part of his life. It also has led him to a fulfilling and rewarding career with local non-profits. He led the nonprofit agency CASTLE and launched the Hope Lives Foundation, helping local youth for the past five years.

Raised in the Midwest, Chris attended Huntington University in Huntington, Indiana, on a track scholarship and graduated with a Bachelor of Science Degree and an MBA. However, his love of sports – especially track/cross country and basketball – and competitive enthusiasm spurred him to take on high school and college coaching responsibilities. This has become his primary “outside activity” for the last 15 years and continues today.

Chris and his wife Angel have been Florida residents for 30 years and raised a son of 26 years, who lives in Indiana. Chris and Angel are extremely active in the community, school, and church.

Born during the early days of the pandemic, Family Promise of Martin County has thrived and positively impacted the lives of countless families in the community.

The mission of the non-profit, interfaith hospitality network is to provide temporary shelter, housing, caring support, meals and a host of social services for working families with children experiencing homelessness.

Some 120 attendees filled the Pittenger Center at St. Mary’s Episcopal Church and sipped Mimosas, enjoyed a delicious repast from Chef’s Table with coffee from Gilbert’s Coffee Bar and listened to Father Christian Anderson of St. Mary’s, Pastor Chad Fair of Immanuel Palm City, Family Promise Executive Director Madeleine Bozone Greenwood and Family Promise Guest Jessica discuss the positive ways lives are changed by the program.

Fore Sistas Golf Tournament set for March 3 to 4

Fore Sistas Golf Tournament set for March 3 to 4

Last year’s inaugural Fore Sistas of Fairview Golf Club, Inc. Women’s Golf Tournament offered a weekend of great golf, important symposiums and outstanding food and entertainment – is it any wonder that the popular event is coming back for a return engagement the weekend of March 3-4?

While it is a women’s golfing event, this year, mixed foursomes (maximum of two men) and men’s foursomes are invited to participate.

The two-day event will kick off at 1 p.m. on Friday, March 3 with a Golf Clinic, followed by a Women’s Health Symposium with a panel of dynamic health professionals, and Welcome Reception featuring hors d’oeuvres, spirit tasting and a deejay.

On Saturday, March 4, access to the practice facility starts at 7 a.m. (subject to availability), Group Photos and Breakfast are scheduled for 8 a.m., followed by the 9 a.m. start of the Shotgun-style Tournament and a Luncheon and Awards Ceremony at 2 p.m.

Cost for the entire weekend is $175 per person with a non-golfing option that includes everything but play for $60 per person.

Fairview Golf Club, Inc, located in West Palm Beach, was established 56 years ago to provide a facility at which African Americans could play the sport, and is currently led by Martha Clark.  Fairview Golf Club, Inc., was gracious in allowing Fore Sistas to affiliate with it.

Fore Sistas of Fairview Golf Club, Inc. is now a 501 (c)(3) nonprofit volunteer service organization of women committed to the expansion and inclusion of talented women in the sport and business of golf through linked friendship, financial support, equity and inclusion.
