Dancing with the Martin Stars takes stage in support of Healthy Start Coalition

Dancing with the Martin Stars takes stage in support of Healthy Start Coalition

The Martin Stars 2022: Front Row: Toni Ryll, Jessica Alvarez, Samantha Suffich, Tanya Chaves, Jane Hallick, Kasia D’Auria, Daisy Krakowiak; Back Row (left to right): Tyler Raynes, Donna Demarchi, Michael Chaves, Bob Murray, Jang Don.

The curtain goes up on the 2022 edition of Martin County’s Dancing with the  Martin Stars at 7 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 24 at the Lyric Theatre in Stuart. Tangos, tap dances, sambas, and waltzes will take center stage in support of the Martin County  Healthy Start Coalition and its mission to ensure that every baby in our community is born healthy and every mother receives support. The premise of Dancing with the Martin Stars is simple but challenging: local volunteers learn dance steps from area professionals, raise funds from friends and neighbors, and then vie for the judges’ votes to claim bragging rights.

“Dancing with the Martin Stars is always a fun event,” says Healthy Start CEO Samantha Suffich. “The purpose, though, is very serious. The funds our volunteers raise help us with our  many programs that provide prenatal care to expectant mothers and then follow through to be  sure that babies are born healthy and receive the services the family needs for a successful  future.”

This year’s contestants include: Kasia D’Auria, Realtor with Re/Max of Stuart, paired with  professional dancer Jang Don; Donna DeMarchi, Esq., Personal Injury Attorney with the Eberst  Law Firm, with Bob Murray; Jane Hallick, President of Jane’s Dane Boutique, with Craig Galvin;  Jessica Alvarez, Founder of Velo Med Spa, with Michael Chaves; Natalie Desmangles, Assistant  Branch Manager with SouthState Bank, with Brian Spector; Rio Ratermanis, Clinical Educator  with HCA Center for Clinical Advancement St. Lucie Hospital, with Marianella Tobar; Dr. Noor

Yono, Premier Neurology, with Leah Landau; Tyler Rayes, SLC Commercial Real Estate, with  Daisy Krakowiak-Wiebe; and Dr. Rabih Kashouty, Neurostrive, with Tanya Chaves. The dancers are actively raising funds in advance of the event. Community members can support a favorite dancer through the Healthy Start website, www.mchealthystart.com. Tickets to the event are available through the Lyric Theatre box office, www.lyrictheatre.com.

A Sponsors Only cocktail party will be held before the dance competition begins. The Eberst  Law Firm is the evening’s title sponsor and encourages individuals and organizations to join them at sponsorship levels ranging from $500 to $10,000.

For more information, visit www.mchealthystart.org or call 772-463-2888.

IRSC’s use of Blockchain Technology featured at Florida Technology & Innovation Solution Summit

The upcoming Florida Technology & Innovation Solution Summit, presented by The Florida Chamber Foundation, features Indian River State College (IRSC) Vice President of Institutional Technology and CIO Tim Marshall. Marshall will present a session titled “Block Chain Examples in Education and Other Industries.” The daylong Summit takes place on Aug. 31 at the Tampa Marriott Water Street.

In Nov. 2021, Marshall introduced the implementation of blockchain technology to remove barriers and open new opportunities for IRSC students. With blockchain technology, students may freely share their education records with anyone, anytime, expediting the process of entering higher education and accelerating their ability to connect with career opportunities.

Marshall, whose three-decade career in education, technology/management services, banking and defense industries, will share how blockchain technology is transforming IRSC and other educational institutions and its potential use for different industries.

“The Florida Chamber Foundation is working on satisfying six pillars of goals outlined in their FL 2030 Blueprint,” said Tim Marshall, IRSC Vice President of Institutional Technology and CIO. “ My presentation will focus on how blockchain technology can be used to meet the goals of the ‘Improving Florida’s Talent Pipeline for a Better Workforce’ pillar, focusing on education and workforce readiness.”

The IRSC Foundation is a Diamond Sponsor of the event. Those interested in joining IRSC can use the promo code “IRSCFTech22” for 10% off in-person attendee registration. Visit the Florida Chamber Foundation website to register and for more information at https://flchm.co/3z07JG5

House of Hope creates edible landscape

House of Hope creates edible landscape

Sunflowers and blackberry bushes add color to the edible landscape outside of House of Hope’s administrative offices.

What better place to find fresh fruit, vegetables and herbs than in your own yard? House of Hope staffers challenged themselves to create an edible landscape in the front of the organization’s administrative offices on Dixie Highway, and their efforts are literally bearing fruit.

“We’ve helped to create gardens in other parts of the community and our Growing Hope Farm in Palm City is producing increasing amounts of fresh, nutritious produce for our clients,” said House of Hope CEO Rob Ranieri. “Becoming involved with the edible landscape movement seemed a logical next step for us at our main facility.”

Now, instead of the typical South Florida landscape with greenery that is pretty but not productive, House of Hope’s colorful landscape is peppered with eggplant, lemongrass, mint, blackberries, Barbados cherries, rosemary, oregano, and vibrant sunflowers. The plantings will change with the seasons so there will always be appropriate fruits and vegetables in bloom and ready for harvest.

House of Hope encourages residents, businesses and organizations throughout Martin County to re-evaluate their own landscapes and think creatively about how to establish an edible yard. “An edible landscape has enormous benefits,” Ranieri said. “It’s a great way to counter increasing prices at the grocery store, add quality nutrition to diets, be a good steward to the environment and teach young people about the source of their food.”

Another teaching tool is House of Hope’s Traveling Nutrition Garden. The mobile garden visits schools, community events, and neighborhood gatherings with hands-on information about what grows in South Florida and how to make healthier choices. Groups and organizations can contact House of Hope at 772-286-4673, ext. 1004 to schedule presentations.

Funding for the edible landscape project came from the Community Foundation for Palm Beach and Martin Counties, along with support from a fund donated in memory of Marnie Abate, one of the original founders of House of Hope and a long-time friend and supporter.

Healthy herbs like mint, rosemary, oregano and lemongrass are available right outside the front door of House of Hope.

About House of Hope

Founded in 1984, House of Hope is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that empowers Martin County residents to overcome hunger and hardship. House of Hope touches the lives of more than 7,000 people each month helping with basic needs such as food, clothing, furniture, financial assistance, as well as longer-term case management services that help build life skills for a more self-sufficient future.

The organization has service centers and thrift stores in Stuart, Hobe Sound, Indiantown, and Jensen Beach. House of Hope’s Enrichment Centers in Golden Gate Center and Jensen Beach offer free programs, technology, and workshops designed to enhance life skills, earning potential, health, and overall well-being.

House of Hope also operates the Growing Hope Farm in Palm City and several nutrition gardens that provide sustainable sources of fresh produce for clients as well as nutrition education and vocational opportunities to the community. Daniel and Shelly Hammer become license partners of Engel & Vőlkers Franchise in Stuart

John Gonzalez (right) welcomes new partners Dan and Shelly Hammer at the Engel & Vőlkers Stuart office.

Treasure Coast real estate advisors Daniel and Shelly Hammer have joined longtime Florida broker John Gonzalez as license partners in the Stuart franchise of luxury real estate firm Engel & Vőlkers®.

The husband-and-wife team has successfully sold real estate as The Hammer Property Group through Engel & Vőlkers Stuart since it opened in 2017, with Gonzalez as sole license partner. The Hammers bring extensive global business, marketing and luxury real estate background to their new ownership roles, while continuing to serve as real estate advisors.

The new partnership creates a solid business and customer relations foundation as Engel & Vőlkers Stuart gears up for sales expansion beyond Stuart into other Treasure Coast communities including Port St. Lucie, Hobe Sound, Hutchinson Island, Jupiter Island, Palm City, Sailfish Point, Sewall’s Point and Tequesta.

“I am thrilled to bring on Dan and Shelly as license partners,” Gonzalez said. “Dan has a long history of success in business, including serving as CEO/president of several global companies. His management experience, operational expertise and strategic vision have led several organizations to significant growth and success. Shelly’s marketing background and customer focus are ideally suited to our shared vision of expanding sales and attracting top talent.”

Dan Hammer said: “John has an impeccable reputation for integrity, and is highly regarded in the community, which is why we’re so enthused to partner with him. I look forward to applying my business and real estate experience – along with the market insights Shelly and I have gained from living in multiple communities across the U.S. – to position Engel & Vőlkers Stuart for success in the expanding Treasure Coast luxury market.”

To meet future growth potential, the partners anticipate adding several talented sales advisors, “We offer a great support platform for individuals with high integrity and professionalism who are serious about succeeding in an incredibly enticing home-buying market,” Shelly Hammer said. “Our team is motivated by helping customers either relocate within the area or discover what a perfect paradise this is for retiring, raising a family or just savoring the good life.”

Gonzalez, a lifelong Florida resident, started a successful career in the mortgage and real estate financing sectors before earning his real estate license and eventually his broker’s license. Gonzalez started Sailfish Realty of Florida before becoming managing broker of Engel & Vőlkers Stuart. He is past president of the Martin County Board of Realtors and a vice president of Florida Realtors, the state’s largest trade association.

Dan and Shelly Hammer have maintained close ties to the Treasure Coast for more than four decades, settling full-time in Stuart in 2014. Dan Hammer is a former president of The Bibb Company and Dan River Inc., CEO/president of Perfect Industries and executive with PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP, in addition to leading his own consulting firm. Shelly Hammer, raised in a real estate family in Michigan that owned a golf course, has a marketing degree from Michigan State University and brings keen insight into golfing communities and other luxury properties. She is a member of the Women’s Council of REALTORS® and is active in the Woman’s Club of Stuart.

Re-Opening of SafeSpace IRC emergency shelter and outreach programs

Re-Opening of SafeSpace IRC emergency shelter and outreach programs

SafeSpace Emergency Shelter in Vero Beach

A major milestone in assisting Treasure Coast victims of domestic violence took place on April 7, 2022, when the eagerly-awaited SafeSpace Emergency Shelter re-opened in Indian River County.

In just two weeks’ time, six women and ten children were welcomed to the facility, which was funded through the generosity and support of John’s Island Foundation, IRC Community Foundation, Impact 100 IRC, John’s Island Community Service League, Head, Heart & Hands – Indian River Club community, and The Gabby Petito Foundation. In addition, the United Way of IRC has supported SafeSpace for many years with funding for programs and services.

The emergency shelter currently has 19 beds and is designed to expand its capacity to 24 beds based when deemed necessary.

In 2004, the building was forced to close due to damage from two hurricanes; however, SafeSpace continued to provide IRC residents with a comprehensive array of outreach (non-residential) programs to help them transition to an independent life free from violence.

In 1979, SafeSpace was established in Indian River County to serve victims of domestic violence. It is the only State-Certified Domestic Violence Center on the Treasure Coast and is a single source provider to aid victims seeking assistance to escape intimate partner domestic violence.

Those served by SafeSpace include adults and their children who are or have been victims of intimate partner violence and are from all cultures, geographic, economic backgrounds, ages, and ethnicities. This included 151 adults and 27 children during 2020-21.

Among the tragedies COVID-19 has wrought is a huge increase in the incidence of domestic violence cases, which have been proven to escalate during periods of social distancing and isolation.

For information about SafeSpace, to make a donation or find out how you can help, visit www.safespacefl.org or call the administrative office at 772-223-2399.

United Way invests over $3 Million into Indian River County

United Way invests over $3 Million into Indian River County

United Way of Indian River distributes more than $1,739,299 to nonprofits throughout the county

The United Way of Indian River County (UWIRC) announced $1,739,299 in funding for local programs and initiatives. Thirty-six agencies will use the funds awarded to implement programs in the Health, Education, and Financial Stability impact areas. The awards run from July 2022 through June 2024 in a two-year cycle.

“Our organization and these local programs and initiatives we help depend on the support of our philanthropic community,” said Deana Shatley, Director of Community Impact. “We are proud to stand united and partner with these organizations to ensure local residents have the opportunity to reach their full potential.”

United Way collaborates with local businesses, government, and nonprofits to meet the most pressing social service issues in Indian River County, large and small. From working to solve over-arching needs such as an aging population to keeping children involved in positive, structured youth activities, United Way has a finger on the pulse of our community. In addition to running a community-wide campaign to raise money for critical human services, the United Way of Indian River County organizes a unique Community Investment Process where over 80 volunteers make decisions on grant applications.

Funds for community partners are raised during United Way of Indian River County’s annual campaign to support three impact areas and generate improved quality of life for our neighbors. Each grant is awarded based on the yearly campaign total, the community goals of UWIRC, and the community’s identified needs.

UWIRC’s 2022-2024 community goals include:

Three Impact Goal Areas have been identified and prioritized by United Way:

  1. Education – Helping children and youth achieve their potential through:

  • Early Learning - All children are nurtured by caregivers who promote early learning and development to prepare them for kindergarten.
  • School and Academic Success - All children succeed and achieve in school, and students will continue to stay on track for High School Readiness.
  • Graduate for Success - Students graduate high school on time, prepared for continuing education, work, and life.
  1. Financial Stability – Promoting financial stability and independence through:

  • Basic Needs - All people have access to an adequate supply of nutritious food. In addition, all people have access to safe, sustainable housing.
  • Family Sustaining Employment & Workforce Skill Development - All people who want to work have the skills and resources they need to seek, gain, and maintain employment. Lower-income working families and individuals achieve and retain life-sustaining employment.
  • Stabilization/ Manageable Expenses - Individuals have the financial resources and assets to avoid a financial crisis.

  1. Health – Improving people’s health and well-being by:

  • Addressing Healthy Weight, Major Depressive Episodes, Ability to Live Independently, Children's Oral Health, Child Abuse, Prenatal Care, Children's Mental Health, Maternal Health, and Childhood Obesity.

To be considered for funding, community partners must submit an application, report measurable outcomes biweekly, and focus on particular communities or neighborhoods with the most need.

All agencies made presentations during the Citizens Review Process, where volunteer funding panels make recommendations to the UWIRC Board of Directors based on how well the agencies addressed United Way’s funding priorities.

“As our community continues to grow, so do the needs. The programs are working,” said Meredith Egan, Chief Executive Officer. “I greatly appreciate our board and committee members who are dedicated to upholding our mission and making these strategic investments possible.”

The United Way of Indian River County Community Investment for 2022-2023 includes support of programs and initiatives in the following categories.

  • Education: $756,921
  • Health: $569,862
  • Financial Stability: $412,516

Volunteers make all funding decisions in the community and dedicate their time to ensure our donor’s dollars are spent with its citizens in mind, that the community’s main priorities and interests are represented, and that United Way is partnering with effective and goal-driven organizations in building a stronger community.
