4-Star rating awarded to Boys & Girls Clubs of Martin County for ninth consecutive year

4-Star rating awarded to Boys & Girls Clubs of Martin County for ninth consecutive year

In its 30-year commitment to making a meaningful difference in the lives of thousands of children each year, Boys & Girls Clubs of Martin County understands that the nonprofit sector is continually advancing and expanding, this is especially true as the community moves past the pandemic. And due to the increasing demand for donations, astute donors are yearning for greater accountability, transparency, and concrete results.

Recognized by Forbes, Business Week, and Kiplinger’s Financial, Charity Navigator recently issued a new rating for Boys & Girls Clubs of Martin County. “We are proud to announce we’ve earned our ninth consecutive 4-star rating,” says Keith “Fletch” Fletcher, BGCMC President and CEO. “This is Charity Navigator’s highest possible rating and indicates that our organization adheres to industry best practices and executes its mission in a fiscally responsible way.”

Attaining a 4-star rating verifies that the organization is exceeding industry standards and outperforming many other charities in the same area of work. This exceptional designation from Charity Navigator sets BGCMC apart and demonstrates to donors, funders, and the community their steadfast dedication to the mission.

As the migration toward digital payment continues to accelerate, driven by the pandemic and the increased interest in digital currencies, BGCMC is expanding its portfolio to also include contributions of cryptocurrency.

“This is an emerging trend among nonprofit organizations in key markets around the country and some of our donors were inquiring about making the option available,” says Fletcher. “We’re excited to embrace crypto contributions for the tax benefits they can provide our donors, while at the same time, lean into innovation and how we can better serve future generations.”

“Martin County is blessed in so many ways, including that it’s home to many titans of industry who care generously about the community,” says Fletcher. “It isn’t just the wealthy retiree who might see the benefits of crypto giving. There is a generation of millennials and Gen Z’s that are leading extremely digital lives and have adapted their finances, accordingly, often investing in cryptocurrency. Leading the crypto trend, they’re looking for new and innovative ways to reap the benefits of investment while making difference in their community.”

When someone donates crypto to charity, they receive a tax deduction for its fair market value and avoid the capital gains tax that accompanies first selling it and then donating cash.  Reports show nationwide that as many as 60 percent of millennials keep digital currency in their investment portfolios, testifying to the long-term feasibility of nonprofits counting on this mode of giving. More information on crypto donations and a widget to easily make a gift to the Boys & Girls Clubs of Martin County can be found at www.bgcmartin.org/crypto.

Bank of America study finds younger women taking greater control of their finances

Bank of America study finds younger women taking greater control of their finances

48% of women are confident about their finances, though only 28% feel empowered to act; Top financial regret is not saving and investing sooner in life

Bank of America announced findings from a new body of research on women and financial wellness, which finds that 94% of women believe they will be personally responsible for their finances at some point in their adult life. Despite this, about half of women (48%) feel confident about their finances and only 28% feel empowered to take action.

The study, which has been published in a new report titled Women, Money, Confidence: A Lifelong Relationship, gauged how women rate their financial health, with a majority of women reporting they are doing well managing their day-to-day finances, like paying their bills every month (70%) and following a budget (53%), however they are struggling with longer term actions like paying down debt (44%), saving for emergencies (44%), saving for retirement (36%) and building wealth (27%). One-in-five women (21%) acknowledge that it is time to make a change to their finances.

“True financial freedom requires both short-term and long-term planning, and the confidence to take action,” said Lorna Sabbia, Head of Retirement & Personal Wealth Solutions at Bank of America. “It is imperative that we give women the tools and resources to take charge of their financial futures, and to close the gaps between confidence, empowerment and action.”

This new study continues Bank of America and Merrill’s extensive research efforts exploring women’s unique life journeys and how various factors impact their financial well-being. The report is based on a nationwide survey of more than 3,500 women and 1,200 men; and examines the progress women are making on their financial journeys and where they might need additional guidance and support.

Investing is a key barrier and top regret

Women are confident managing everyday financial tasks such as paying bills (92%) and managing a budget (87%), yet only half are confident managing investments (53%) and creating a diversified portfolio (44%).

While women and men have nearly equal influence on day-to-day financial decisions, such as paying bills (68% of women vs. 67% of men) and determining the household budget (63% vs. 63%), less than half of women feel they have influence when it comes to decisions on investments (46% vs. 64%). The top obstacles women say are holding them back from investing include not having savings to invest (38%), lack of knowledge (32%) and believing investing is too risky (22%).

When asked about their financial regrets, nearly half of women (44%) pointed to not saving and investing sooner. Women also say they would have invested more of their money (26%), educated themselves more around money (23%), not taken on as much credit card debt (21%), chosen a career with higher pay (19%), lived within their means (18%) and taken better care of their health (14%).

Other key findings include:

  • Younger women paving the way for open financial conversations. Younger women (ages 22-39) are more comfortable having financial conversations than their older counterparts (ages 65+), including talking with financial advisors (73% vs. 64%), applying for new or better positions at work (74% vs. 42%), discussing new investment opportunities (65% vs. 44%) and asking for a raise (59% vs. 38%).
  • Being debt free seen as the top indicator of financial independence. 47% of women listed being debt-free as the hallmark of financial independence. Other top indicators included being able to weather an unexpected expense (39%), being able to support myself without financial help from my family (34%) and being able to support my family (32%). Paying off debt also topped the list of barriers to improving financial wellness (36%), followed by high cost of living (34%) and not being paid enough (31%).
  • Women’s confidence levels vary for financial events during different life stages. A majority of women are confident about paying for future healthcare costs (56%) and staying comfortable in retirement (54%), but confidence levels drop as it pertains to buying a home (40%), funding children’s or grandkids’ education (38%) and taking care of aging parents (32%).
  • Financial planning varies by groups. While 82% of women have a financial plan, only 30% focused on plans of 10 years or more. Caucasian and Asian-American women are more likely to have long-term plans (35% and 37%, respectively) than Black (20%) or Hispanic (20%) women. Women who identify as LGBTQ+ are also less likely to have a long-term plan (21%).
  • Saving for retirement is top of mind, yet many don’t have an actionable plan. Saving for retirement topped the list of short-term (49%) and long-term (54%) goals, yet one-in-five women approaching retirement do not have a financial plan. In addition, 57% have not figured out how much to save for a comfortable retirement and 40% are not confident about staying comfortable in retirement.
  • Older women turn to Social Security to fund retirement, younger women plan to lean on savings. 90% of women 65+ plan to rely on Social Security in retirement (vs. 49% of women ages 22-39). Younger women ages 22-39 are more likely to plan on using personal savings (63%, vs. 53% of women 65+).
  • Women in the workforce face unique concerns, prioritizing salary increases over time off. About half (49%) of women left the workforce at some point, with the primary reason being caregiving (58%). While 36% returned to a lower-paying job, a majority of women (77%) do not regret their decision to spend time away from their career, and 71% say returning to their job was rewarding. In addition, when asked if they would prefer higher pay or additional time off, 61% said they would prefer a pay increase.
  • Women continue to look for reliable sources of advice to help them on their financial journeys. Though 35% say “a go-to trustworthy source for advice” would help make managing their finances easier and 44% see a financial advisor as a key financial resource, 55% have never worked with one. In addition, though reliance on financial advisors increased only slightly with age (41% of women ages 22-39 vs. 47% of women ages 65+), it increased significantly by income level (35% of women with less than $50k in income vs. 61% of women with more than $250k in income).

“At Bank of America, we’re committed to helping all women navigate the nuances of their financial journeys by providing the foundational education, professional advice and resources needed to build their confidence and take action to achieve financial security,” said Sabbia.

Quotas were enforced to ensure results were representative within gender by age, race, income and assets, marital status, employment status, and education. Survey content was developed by Ipsos in consultation with the Bank of America team.

Vero Beach Theatre Guild celebrates 65 years

Vero Beach Theatre Guild celebrates 65 years

The Vero Beach Theatre Guild announced its lineup of Broadway hits for the 2022-23 theatre season. Celebrating 65 years, the Guild will kick off their Sapphire Anniversary with an all-time favorite musical, Footloose, directed and choreographed by Beth McKenzie-Shestak. With a talented cast of 30 local actors, Footloose is everything you could ask for in a lightweight, fluffy musical. The perfect fare for a summer's weekend. Performances will be given from July 8 through July 31. This season's main stage performances will be shown on Friday and Saturday evenings at 7:30 pm, with Saturday and Sunday matinees at 2 pm.

The month of September will keep not only the Guild actors, staff, and crew busy but its audiences as well, with 10 X Tenn the first annual month-long theatre festival featuring ten plus events by or about Tennessee Williams. The festival will open on September 7 with the Welcome Williams Wine Party on the patio with a fabulous display in the theatre lobby of memorabilia from the Tennessee Williams Museum in Key West, Florida. Curators Dennis Beaver and Bret Wite will welcome everyone and give a brief background of the display depicting the life and times of Mr. Williams and what Vero Beach can expect from the Theatre Guild during the entire month of September. Following the brief seminar will be a feature film Tennessee Williams' South. Williams is front and center in this classic exploration by reading directly from his works, placing them in the context of his life, and serving as a guide in visits to his career shaping refuge in New Orleans and his latter-day writing in Key West.

Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, directed by Pam Harbaugh and featuring a cast of locals in all roles, will be the Guild's anchor production for the month, opening on Friday, September 9, and running through September 30. Additional monthly events will feature staged readings of The Glass Menagerie, Summer and Smoke trouped in from Florida members of the American Association of Community Theatres, including A Streetcar Named Desire by the Lake Worth Playhouse. In addition, that evening will draw out the many Marlon Brando wannabes during the "Stella" Contest held in the east parking lot following the performance. The contest winner will receive two tickets to the November production Musical Chairs.

Movie Nights will occur throughout the month showing the Tennessee Williams classics Sweet Bird of Youth, The Rose Tattoo, The Night of the Iguana, and Suddenly Last Summer. The Guild's wine bar will be open for all events during the festival, and many will feature informal talk-back sessions on the patio after the live performances and film screenings.

Two one-act plays running as a double-bill on Thursday evenings include This Property Is Condemned, directed by Artistic Director Jon Putzke, and the only comedy written by Tennessee is The Case of the Crushed Petunias, under Tory Malfoy's direction.

In conjunction with the Guild's Education Academy, on September 13, Michael D. Naffziger will hold a master acting class, Ten and the Will (10 decisions to find the will of your character.) Tuesday, the 20th of the month, will be an organized debate over Inclusive Casting. Both educational events will take place on the second floor of the east wing.

Booze & Blues at Moon Lake Casino, a live cabaret night on the patio, will celebrate the festival's closing on October 1. Jacob Craig and his jazz trio will perform with several Guild singers entertaining patrons with the music that surrounded the career of one of the most distinguished American playwrights of our time, Tennessee Williams. Included that evening will be a Southern Bourbon Tasting, wine bar, food truck, and the opportunity to meet many participants and performers from the festival productions.

Following the festival in November, the Theatre Guild's next main stage production will be the song-filled Musical Chairs, directed by Patti Hall. In January, the world-renowned comedy Visiting Mr. Green will be directed by Lisa Keeler. The March musical The Boy from Oz, under the direction of Ben Earman, depicts the life and times of the great songwriter Peter Allen. The 65th season will end in May with Agatha Christie's who-dun-it Murder on the Nile directed by Alex Martinez.

The newly opened Studio Theatre season of staged play readings includes the hit comedy 'Art' followed by two more comedies, Love, Loss & What I Wore in December and The Lifespan of a Fact in February. The final readers' theatre production will be Peter Schaffer's acclaimed Equus.

The Guild is currently running their annual Flex Pass Season Subscription sale for six main stage productions and the 4-play series. Flex passes save patrons between $15 and $25. In addition, single admission tickets for the main stage and studio productions are also on sale. Money-saving Ticket Bundles for the theatre festival will go on sale on August 1. Complete information can be found on the Guild’s website verobeachtheatreguild.com or by phoning the box office Mondays through Fridays from 10 am to 2 pm and one hour before performances at 772-562-8300. The theatre and box office is located at 2020 San Juan Avenue, Vero Beach, Florida.

Indian River County Awards Incentives to Local Firm

Indian River County Awards Incentives to Local Firm

Lemnature AquaFarms expanding its operations in Indian River County

The Indian River County Chamber of Commerce Economic  Development Office announced that the IRC Board of County  Commissioners unanimously approved a Local Jobs Grant incentive application for  Lemnature AquaFarms. Lemnature AquaFarms is a business-to-business plant-based food ingredient supplier to the food, beverage, and nutrition markets, currently expanding its operations in Indian River County.

The Indian River County Local Jobs Grant is a performance-based incentive program that pays up to $7,000 per new job created, based on the average wages paid to new hires. At least five new jobs must be created, paying a minimum of 75% of the county’s average annual wage. Based on county staff calculations, the company is eligible for up to $200,000 in Jobs Grant funds. The award is paid out over a period of  3-5 years after the jobs are in place and confirmed by county staff.

Lemnature AquaFarms has three locations in Indian River County, including its corporate headquarters, an R&D facility in Fellsmere, plus a large aquafarming and processing operation in western Indian River County. The company anticipates adding  46 employees to its current base of 115 workers by the end of the calendar year, at an average annual wage of $59,800, excluding benefits.

Expressing his appreciation, Frank Jimenez, CEO of Lemnature AquaFarms,  states “We appreciate and value the partnerships with the Chamber and its Economic

Development Office, and the Board of County Commissioners, as we build and scale our highly sustainable, plant-based food business and aquafarm within Indian River  County.” Further explaining, he adds, “We believe in building innovative farming  solutions to help accelerate the transition to a regenerative food system while assisting our customers in the achievement of sustainable development goals through a more  efficient agricultural process based on aquaculture.”

The company grows and processes the all-natural Lemnaceae aquatic plant, aka water lentils, which grows naturally – and rapidly - in Indian River County. This aquatic plant doubles its biomass every 48 hours so harvesting can be done daily, year-round in the county’s tropical type of climate. The company will be producing plant-based protein and fiber to be included as ingredients within superfood drinks, protein powders,  and nutritional beverages.

As a way to promote the company and its mission, Helene Caseltine, the  Chamber’s Economic Development Director, arranged for the company’s CEO to give a  presentation to the Commissioners at their regular meeting of April 5, 2022. “The  County Commission is excited to see Lemnature AquaFarms expanding in Indian River  County,” said Commission Chairman Peter O’Bryan. “We are very pleased that programs like our Local Jobs Grant can assist local companies with their expansion plans. We’re not only interested in attracting new business to Indian River County, but  also encouraging our local businesses to expand and add jobs.”

Helene Caseltine echoed Mr. Jimenez’s appreciation of the County Commission,  adding “We thank the Commissioners for their continued support of our economic development activities. The Board’s actions demonstrate that, indeed, Indian River  County, FL is ready and open for business.”

For more information on locating or expanding a business in Indian River County,  call Helene Caseltine at the Indian River County Chamber of Commerce, 772-567-3491 or visit www.indianrivered.com.
