FELLSMERE — When Big Brothers Big Sisters of St. Lucie, Indian River, and Okeechobee Counties (BBBS) CEO Stacey Watson-Mesley asked “Want to have a Meat Raffle?” the BBBS Team looked at her in confusion.

“A what?” questioned Taylor Farnsworth, BBBS’ Development Officer while Marketing Coordinator, Megan Rossknecht, began to laugh and asked, “Can you please explain?”

“A Meat Raffle,” replied Watson-Mesley, “is exactly what it sounds like. When I lived in Buffalo there were whole websites dedicated to charity Meat Raffle events. We have wonderful meat and seafood resources here in Florida, so why not have a meat raffle and potentially connect with some great mentors?”

On June 11, 2019 BBBS and Guy’s Quality Meats will bring this Buffalo, N.Y. tradition to Fellsmere, at the Broken Spoke Bar from 6-9 p.m.

“The work we do at Big Brothers Big Sisters is joyful and our fundraising efforts should be as well,” said the organization’s leader who joined the team of ‘Defenders of Potential’ earlier this year. “We want people to come out and have a great time celebrating mentoring while potentially heading home with quality meat and seafood for their families.”

Tickets to attend the Meat Raffle are $10.00 including non-alcoholic beverages and “bar food” snacks. A cash bar is available as well. Seats are limited so purchase them in advance at www.meatraffle.org. The event organizers recommend bringing a personal cooler to take winnings home!

Meat Raffle tickets are available during the event for $1, $2 and $3 depending on the round (there will be 20 rounds) and patrons may purchase as many tickets as they want. BBBS will also be offering a basket raffle to add to the fun.

The recently renovated Broken Spoke Bar is located at 130 N. Broadway Street in Fellsmere, FL. Owners Patty and Lance Hummell believe in the mission of BBBS. When asked why to take a whole evening out of regular business to host a fundraiser, Lance said, “Big Brothers Big Sisters helps so many children here in Fellsmere and we are honored to support this important work. Through events like this and motorcycle runs, the Broken Spoke gets to give back to our community.”

Big Brothers Big Sisters continues its commitment to provide children with strong and enduring, professionally supported mentoring relationships that lead to positive outcomes for children. Big Brothers Big Sisters’ Youth Outcomes Survey Report substantiates that BBBS programs have proven, positive academic, socio-emotional, and behavioral outcomes for youth, areas linked to high school graduation, avoidance of juvenile delinquency, and college or job readiness.
