United Way IRC prepares volunteers for hurricane response through certification training
United Way of Indian River County, in partnership with the Indian River County Emergency Management Division, is taking proactive steps to prepare the community for future disasters—especially hurricanes—through the operation of the Volunteer Reception Center (VRC).
The VRC plays a vital role in times of crisis by connecting volunteers with local individuals in need of post-disaster cleanup and recovery assistance. Strategically staffed and operated in coordination with the County’s Emergency Management Division, the center ensures that volunteer skills are matched with real-time community needs.
Volunteer roles at the VRC include registration, intake and interviewing, data entry, safety support, greeters, runners, and phone bank assistance. No special experience is required—just a willingness to help. There’s a role for everyone, and bilingual volunteers are especially encouraged to participate.
“In the aftermath of a disaster, the needs across our community can be vast,” said Meredith Egan, Chief Executive Officer of United Way of Indian River County. “From distributing supplies to providing hands-on assistance, our trained volunteers are a crucial part of a coordinated and effective recovery.”
To ensure volunteers are ready when disaster strikes, United Way is hosting a 1-day VRC certification training provided by Volunteer Florida. The training will take place on Thursday, June 5, from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM at the United Way Center. Participants must be 18 years or older. The registration deadline is May 31, 2025.
