Treasure Coast Square eyes major overhaul

Treasure Coast Square could be headed for its biggest transformation since opening nearly four decades ago, with plans emerging to redevelop part of the Jensen Beach mall into a mixed-use, open-air destination centered on housing, dining and entertainment.

According to a report published by TCPalm, the proposal would redevelop the Macy’s portion of the mall property into a pedestrian-friendly lifestyle center featuring outdoor retail storefronts, restaurants, gathering spaces and a large residential component. The redevelopment plan calls for approximately 1,200 apartment units as part of a broader effort to modernize the aging enclosed mall format and create a live-work-play environment.

Treasure Coast Square, which opened in 1987 and sits on more than 80 acres in Martin County, has already begun shifting toward entertainment-focused attractions. Earlier this year, Elev8 Fun opened inside the former Sears building, bringing bowling, go-karts, arcade games and other family-oriented entertainment to the property.

Mall owner Simon Property Group has not announced a timeline for demolition of Macy’s, which remains open, nor has it released final site plans or construction dates. Still, the redevelopment concept signals a dramatic shift for one of the Treasure Coast’s largest retail centers.

The proposal reflects a growing national trend in which traditional malls are being reimagined as mixed-use communities that combine housing, entertainment, restaurants and outdoor public spaces.
