The Florida Remembered Society serves up a “Red, White & FOOD” local heritage exhibition and special opening event
The average American eats 2,000 pounds (1 ton) of food each year, so it’s only natural that food is such an important part of our history, our lifestyles, and local business. Food not only fills our stomachs but also forges an identity for our community and connects various cultures. “Food brings people together, and creates enduring emotions and memories. And so will “Red, White & FOOD,” an exhibition presented by the Florida Remembered Society (FRS), supported by Florida Humanities and the Smithsonian Institution’s “Museum on Main Street” program,” says Anne Sinnott, a director for FRS. Red, White & FOOD opens Sat., Jan. 24 at the St. Lucie School, 2501 Old Dixie Hwy. in historic St. Lucie Village, and will run through Dec., 2026 in celebration of our Nation’s 250th anniversary.
“We are using the topic of food to feed the American spirit and explore how food unites us and delights us,” Sinnott adds. Various exhibits within “Red, White & FOOD” feature themes of “Land of Plenty,” “Local Flavors,” “Dynamic Delivery,” and “Home Cooking.”
“The exhibition includes bountiful artifacts, objects, photographs, recipes, and hands-on fun. The community has generously shared food items, objects, and individual stories so that visitors can engage in the foodways and flow of time from early Native American food traditions to new- fangled kitchen technologies.”
The exhibition’s opening event January 24th from 1 until 4 p.m. welcomes the public to explore local recreational and commercial fishing and lagoon livelihoods and features the following activities:
- Talks by colorful and engaging sea captains
- A “best smoked fish dip on the Treasure Coast” (Smak Down): contest
- “Something’s Fishy” children’s activities
- Tastes of local history
- Sensory-rich food heritage exhibits
The FRS exhibition is part of a statewide series of exhibits that explore local foodways. Support for “Red, White & FOOD” was provided through a grant from Florida Humanities with funds from the Jacarlene Foundation, local sponsors, and the Town of St. Lucie Village
