Our Lagoon—Our Legacy Saturday, September 19th
Visit “Our Lagoon—Our Legacy” exhibits and programs Saturday, September 19th at 2 pm at the St. Lucie (Village) School, and explore how you can help benefit our local Indian River Lagoon, North America’s largest biodiverse estuary of 156 miles of waters and shoreline and over 4,000 species of animals and plants.
Plan to arrive a few minutes early for the 2 p.m. program which will be followed by workshops, displays, and hands-on activities provided by various local educational and environmental group presenters at the St. Lucie School, 2501 North Old Dixie Hwy, Fort Pierce, FL 34946.
Scholars, scientists, and representatives from Docks for a Clean Lagoon, the University of Florida/IFAS Florida Sea Grant program, One Lagoon, the Manatee Center, and the Florida Remembered Society will be the key presenters of engaging interactive programs and projects. The Manatee Center/Fort Pierce Utilities Authority will host a Vertical Oyster Garden workshop as part of this event.
Topics will include making individual efforts to positively impact the health of the Lagoon, installing vertical oyster gardens, and supporting living shoreline and shoreline restoration and protections to clean the water and enhance aquatic life.
“The Lagoon has been central to our culture, lifestyles, livelihood, and lovely surroundings since before recorded history. But today, the Lagoon is stressed and susceptible due to overdevelopment, population growth, stormwater runoff, and loss of seagrasses,” Making meaningful efforts to restore the health of the lagoon for today and tomorrow is essential,” said Anne Sinnott, of the Florida Remembered Society.
Scheduled speakers include the following and will be followed by interactive programs and projects:
- 2 p.m. Caleta Scott of One Lagoon
- 2:15 Dr. Vincent Encomio of the University of Florida/IFAS Florida Sea Grant program
- 2-45 Elyse Geraghty of the Manatee Center
- 3:00 Barbara Brown of Docks for a Clean Lagoon.
The “Our Lagoon—Our Legacy“ program is funded in part by Florida Remembered Society through an America250/Florida250 public programs grant award from Florida Humanities, the National Endowment for the Humanities, and the Jacarlene Foundation. The Indian River Lagoon National Estuary Program is providing funding for the oyster workshops.
