Humane Society of St. Lucie County holds “Kids to Kitties Reading Program” Saturdays
The Humane Society of St. Lucie County is excited to announce the official launch of its Kids to Kitties reading session, beginning Saturday, February 15th, from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. at the shelter. This weekly event will offer kids in the community the opportunity to connect with the cats at the shelter while independently reading in a cozy, safe environment. The Kids to Kiddies Reading Program is designed to be mutually beneficial for students aged 6-15 who want to improve their reading skills and for shy, anxious shelter cats. Readers can bring their own books or borrow one from our shelter’s small library.
A special thanks to Sherry Dunn, the catalyst behind this program, without whom this initiative would not have been possible. Additionally, every student will have the opportunity to read Dunn’s book Maddie & Jasmine. Her passion for animal welfare truly shines through those pages!
Shelter animals offer a calming presence that can provide support and comfort to participants. The program will also help foster compassion and empathy for animals in need. In turn, students will give the shelter cats additional stress-free, positive human interaction. Research shows that reading can have a calming effect on shelter animals, which in turn increases their chances of being adopted. Researchers have also noted a decrease in the length of stay for animals that receive this enrichment.
Join us for this heartwarming, furry-good time! Each Saturday, the shelter will host up to four participants, so reserve your spot by calling the shelter or signing up HERE.
“This is a great chance for kids to learn and grow while also helping the animals in their community! I’m so excited to see how the kids’ passion for caring for animals is shining through, and I know they’ll also develop stronger reading and comprehension skills along the way.” – Dominique Hedgepeth
