Former Stuart mayor named interim BDBMC director
The Business Development Board of Martin County has appointed Troy McDonald interim executive director. McDonald was unanimously appointed Sept. 23 by the BDBMC board of directors. McDonald joined the organization in 2025 as director of economic development after more than a decade in public office, including four years as mayor of Stuart.
“Troy is uniquely equipped for this position because he has a policymaker’s understanding of the challenges and significance of economic development and how it can positively transform a community, as well as a strong grasp of what businesses need and how to help them succeed,” said Steve Hartz, president of the BDBMC board of directors. “It’s a natural fit. We’re confident in the direction he’ll take the organization and eager to see what milestones he and the team achieve.”
In his previous role, McDonald oversaw the Pulse program and coordinated with industry leaders on several recurring BDBMC events, including the Manufacturers Round Table series, Horizons commercial real estate forums and Talent Advancement Team sessions focused on workforce development.
McDonald also assisted expanding companies investing in Martin County with site selection, resource connections and process navigation. He recently helped attract and support two marine manufacturers: Catch Boatworks, with a 5,600-square-foot facility, and Weedoo Boats, with a 27,000-square-foot operation.
Before joining the BDBMC staff, McDonald owned and operated a business serving the local legal profession and served 12 years on the Stuart City Commission. He served four years as mayor, including during the city’s centennial, and was appointed to several boards, including the BDBMC board of directors, where he chaired the organization during its reorganization.
He also served on the Stuart Community Redevelopment Agency, the Martin County Metropolitan Planning Organization and the Treasure Coast Transportation Council.
“I’m honored for this opportunity and grateful for the board’s support in appointing me to the interim position,” McDonald said. “I’ve been blessed to contribute to the vital work of the BDB from many vantage points, but this is the most exciting by far. With the board of directors in place and greater awareness among leaders in the aviation, marine and manufacturing industries, Martin County’s economy can benefit from stronger existing businesses, high-skilled job attraction and a more diverse tax base.”
