City of Fort Pierce submits recertification to support flood insurance discounts for residents

The City of Fort Pierce Building Department submitted its annual Community Rating System (CRS) recertification to the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP), continuing its proactive efforts to reduce flood risks and support residents through discounted flood insurance premiums. “This recertification helps the City maintain a Class 6 rating so our residents can benefit from flood insurance rate reductions,” said Paul Thomas, Building Director and Floodplain Administrator for the City of Fort Pierce. The CRS is a program administered by FEMA that rewards communities for going above and beyond the minimum NFIP requirements. By performing key floodplain management and public outreach activities, the City of Fort Pierce earns credit toward lower insurance premiums for residents—especially those living in flood-prone areas.

With its current Class 6 rating, the City qualifies homeowners in federally recognized Special Flood Hazard Areas (SFHAs) for a 20 percent discount on their flood insurance premiums. Certain policies for properties outside of SFHAs may also be eligible for a 10 percent discount. Since 1968, the NFIP has helped communities manage flood risks and reduce future damages through proper planning and insurance coverage. Today, nearly 1,300 communities participate in the CRS, helping nearly 5 million policyholders nationwide. The City of Fort Pierce is proud to be able to participate in this important program that directly benefits residents by reducing their flood insurance costs and ensuring the long-term safety and resilience of our community.
