Annual suicide prevention symposium: Surviving Suicide

Suncoast Mental Health Center, a leading advocate in mental health awareness and suicide prevention, is hosting its annual Suicide Prevention Symposium on September 20 at Coral Shores Behavioral Health in Stuart. This year’s event, themed “Surviving Suicide,” will bring together mental health professionals, survivors, advocates, and community members to foster dialogue, share innovative strategies for supporting those in crisis, and strengthen our collective efforts to change the narrative on suicide.

The program will feature a dynamic lineup of keynote speakers, including renowned experts in mental health and grief counseling, inspirational survivors, and dedicated advocates. Highlights of the event will include:

  • Featured Speakers: Insightful presentations by Andy McNeil, MA, trainer for the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention and co-author of “Understanding and Supporting Bereaved Children: A Practical Guide for Professionals,” and Leah Suarez, MNM, CNP, CRPS, Trauma Thriver and CEO of Our Village Okeechobee.
  • Panel Discussion: Interactive panel addressing questions, challenges and solutions in suicide prevention, with contributions from mental health practitioners and individuals affected by suicide.
  • Resource Fair: Information and resources from local organizations dedicated to mental health services, including counseling, support groups, crisis helplines, and residential programs.

“Suicide prevention is a critical issue that requires collaboration from all sectors of society,” said Tracy Hernandez, Director of Development for Suncoast Mental Health Center. “This symposium serves as a platform to unite voices, share knowledge, and facilitate actionable solutions. Our goal is to provide attendees with the resources and inspiration needed to make a meaningful difference in their communities.”

In addition to the educational and networking opportunities, this free community event aims to raise awareness, reduce stigma, empower individuals to seek help, and offer support to those in need. Join us in our commitment to prevent suicide and promote mental wellness. Together, we can create a brighter future where every life is valued and supported.
