FORT PIERCE — John Romano, CEO of New Horizons of the Treasure Coast and Okeechobee, will retire at the end of 2018 after thirty years of service to the community’s nonprofit provider of mental health and substance abuse services.

During Romano’s career, New Horizons has grown throughout Indian River, Martin, Okeechobee and St. Lucie Counties to offer a full range of mental health and substance abuse services to more than 12,000 clients annually. These services include crisis units for children and adults, inpatient care, outpatient counseling, a detox unit, a 28-day substance abuse recovery program, mental health court services, learning centers for psychosocial rehabilitation, and a transitional group home. Recently the organization has added a Primary Care Clinic and the Zero Suicide Initiative. It has taken the lead in the Treasure Coast Opioid Task Force, which serves all four counties.

“John has been a tremendous advocate for the clients of New Horizons and their families,” says Patricia Austin, Chairman of the Board of Directors. “He has brought needed programs to the community and led the organization with great integrity and professionalism. He was certainly the right person for the job, and we will miss him.”

The Board is currently conducting a search for a new Chief Executive Officer to be in place before January 2019. Applications and nominations are being accepted through the New Horizons Human Resources Department.
This year is the 60th anniversary of New Horizons, which was begun by a group of concerned citizens in Fort Pierce in 1958. A gala will be held on November 10 at Harbour Ridge Yacht and Country Club to celebrate the anniversary and to honor John Romano. Details about this event, the upcoming fashion show fundraiser in Vero Beach, the Race for Recovery, and New Horizons programs are available on the New Horizons website, www.nhtcinc.org.
