Florida Remembered Society wins humanities grant

Florida Humanities has awarded Florida Remembered Society a $10,000 Public Humanities Program Grant to support “Feeding the American Spirit: 250 Years of Florida’s Homegrown History,” a yearlong series of cultural heritage programs and events highlighting Florida’s role in the American story.

The Florida Remembered Society programs will commemorate America250 and celebrate more than 500 years of Florida’s recorded history through history, humanities and heritage programming for audiences of all ages.

“Programs, lectures, exhibits, oral histories, displays and demonstrations will highlight our hard-working everyday heroes and the lifestyles, livelihoods and lives of our culturally diverse Floridians,” said Anne Sinnott, president of the Florida Remembered Society board of directors. “Programs are open to the public for audiences of all ages and backgrounds.”

Program themes include “Trails Through Time,” “Red, White & Boomers,” a “Harvest of History” art show and Florida Talks scholar presentations. Most programs will be held at the historic St. Lucie Village School in the National Register-listed historic district of St. Lucie Village.

The grant also will help Florida Remembered Society expand educational and entertaining programming tied to its “Red, White & FOOD” cultural heritage exhibition at the school. The exhibition is a collaboration with the Smithsonian Institution’s Museum on Main Street, Florida Humanities and the Jacarlene Foundation.

Florida Humanities’ Public Humanities Program Grants award up to $10,000 to nonprofits and public institutions to create programming that brings people together to reflect on history, heritage, civic life and culture.

“Florida’s cultural organizations and nonprofits play a vital role in connecting communities, inspiring hope and broadening perspectives,” said Nashid Madyun, executive director of Florida Humanities. “Florida Humanities is thrilled to support public humanities programming such as these through Public Humanities Program Grants.”

All events and programs throughout the coming year are free and open to the public.
