Fort Pierce officials named Home Rule Heroes

The City of Fort Pierce announced that Mayor Linda Hudson and Commissioner Curtis Johnson Jr. have been named 2026 Home Rule Heroes by the Florida League of Cities. The annual award recognizes local government officials who work to protect the home rule authority of Florida municipalities and advocate for local decision-making during the state legislative session.

Hudson and Johnson were honored for their advocacy during the 2026 legislative session, including their efforts to engage state lawmakers and advance the League’s legislative priorities on behalf of Florida cities. Their work supported the principle of “local voices making local choices.”

Home rule gives local governments the authority to address community needs through local solutions with limited state interference. The Florida League of Cities created the Home Rule Hero Award to recognize elected and nonelected local officials who respond to the League’s calls to action and provide legislators with local perspectives on issues affecting municipalities.

“On behalf of the City of Fort Pierce, we congratulate Mayor Hudson and Commissioner Johnson on this well-deserved recognition,” City Manager Richard D. Chess said. “Their advocacy and commitment to preserving local decision-making ensure that Fort Pierce continues to have a strong voice in shaping policies that directly affect our residents and community.”
