First recipient of Martin Loan Fund celebrates its grand opening

The first local business to benefit from the Martin Loan Fund was the Old Havana Café. Celebrating its grand opening in Stuart at 2225 SE Ocean Blvd., Old Havana Café got its start on the road in Toronto.

Launching first a food truck known as, “The Cuban Thing,” the food was so popular, owner Chuchi Rivero five years later added a second truck. Rivero and his wife and business partner, Patricia Salazar, built a big fan base for their delicious dishes and earned five-star reviews and multiple awards, including “Best Cuban Mobile Food and Catering in Canada.”

The menu at the Stuart location will feature the El Cubano sandwich, empanadas, and gluten-free wraps. Burger lovers can indulge in the Cuban Smash Burger. Toppings include their popular “Island Mogo Sauce” or homemade “Caliente Sauce.”

Soothe the heat with a refreshing mango smoothie or “Havana Tropic,” a blend of pineapple juice, mint and ginger. For dessert, guests can enjoy Cuban pastries such as “Pastelitos de Guayaba,” and of course, a cup of café con leche.

With its motto, “90 Years of Cuban Tradition in One Bite,” Old Havana Café represents the realization of the couple’s dream of owning a bricks and mortar establishment. A self-taught chef, Rivero is also an award-winning cinematographer who worked in film and television for 40 years, even directing the TV show, “MasterChef Latino,” a hit on Telemundo and Estrella TV. He soaked up the experience working with renowned chefs and food celebrities, shaping his vision for his own restaurant.

“Stuart,” says Rivero, “we are here and with lots of love, passion, and a dedicated, blessed heart to serve the community.”
