Waldo Sexton Homestead Days return Jan. 7-8

Waldo Sexton Homestead Days return Jan. 7-8

Treasure Coast residents will have a rare opportunity this weekend to visit the original 1917 homestead of Vero Beach pioneer Waldo Sexton. Saturday and Sunday, Jan. 7-8, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The family of Mark Tripson, grandson of Waldo Sexton, are hosting Waldo Sexton Homestead Days on the property at 5000 12th St., Vero Beach.

Sexton, who arrived in Vero Beach in 1913, would go on in the next five decades to create such landmarks as the Ocean Grill, McKee Jungle Gardens, Waldo's Mountain, Driftwood Inn, Patio Restaurant and Szechuan Palace.

Sexton, also celebrated for the phrase “I’d rather be a liar than a bore,’’ claimed to begin construction on a home shortly after arriving in Vero, but it wasn’t until 1917 that he moved into the bungalow. A year later, he married Elsebeth Martens and took her to live in the house, where she found that one room served as a living area while the other was kept full of livestock feed.

Over the years, Sexton would go onto expand the house to two stories to accommodate his family of four children. When grown daughter Barbara Tripson became pregnant with her first child, he built a second home next door for her and her husband, John Tripson.

Sexton started his Vero Beach Dairy on the property, which became Tripson Dairy after Tripson took it over.

Sexton’s homestead today, purchased by Tripson and his late wife, Hildie, in 1980, is much the same way as when Sexton lived in it and features trademark use of objects such as driftwood, iron and other recognizable features from the ruins of Palm Beach mansions Sexton salvaged.  Visitors will also be able to see his secret garden and outdoor kitchen, as well as to meet members of the gregarious Tripson family. Admission is $10 for adults and $5 for children. Tickets can be purchased at the door through 3 p.m. each day or obtained online at www.waldossecretgarden.com.

Saturday and Sunday’s visitors will be able to hear the following presentations:

—11 a.m. Saturday:: paranormal investigator Larry Lawson will share results of a ghost study taken at the home and talk about other ghost lore related to Waldo Sexton.

—1 p.m. Saturday: Indian River Magazine Publisher Gregory Enns interviews Mark Tripson and other descendants who share memories of Waldo Sexton.

Saturday 2pm: Tribal Courts of the Seminole Tribe, will talk about the history and impact of the Seminoles in Florida.

Sunday Schedule to be announced: Representatives from the A.E. Backus Museum

19th Annual Walk to Remember Draws Largest Crowd Ever

19th Annual Walk to Remember Draws Largest Crowd Ever

The 19th Annual Walk To Remember was held on Nov. 12 to benefit the Alzheimer & Parkinson Association of Indian River County. Boasting one of the largest crowds ever with nearly 450 walkers, the Walk allowed participants to meander through Riverside Park, and to stroll through Veterans Memorial Island Sanctuary, as well.

Pre-walk festivities included honoring our Veterans, with Moreen Burkhart singing the National Anthem while the Sebastian River High School NJROTC color guard presented the flag, followed by an energizing warm-up led by personal trainer John Sammartano.

Founded in 1982, the Alzheimer & Parkinson Association offers 40 programs to those with memory and movement disorders, and their families, all free of charge. It is not affiliated with any national organization, relying on the generosity of the philanthropic community, grants, and fundraisers. The annual Walk To Remember is the nonprofit’s signature fundraising event, and donations for the Walk are still being accepted

Thank you to these major sponsors of this year’s Walk, whose financial support laid the foundation for this year’s success. Presenting Sponsors were: Walter Borisenok Family Foundation, Este and Charles Brashears, and Coastal Concierge Services. Platinum Sponsors were George E. Warren LLC and Christine Lipski.

The mission of the Alzheimer & Parkinson Association is “to improve the quality of life for individuals and families in Indian River County who are affected by memory and movement disorders, through support, education and connection.” To learn more about the organization, call 772-563-0505 or visit www.AlzPark.org.

Free history festival returns to downtown Fort Pierce Jan. 14

Free history festival returns to downtown Fort Pierce Jan. 14

Treasure Coast history will come alive in downtown Fort Pierce on Saturday, Jan. 14, as the 6th Annual Treasure Coast History Festival is celebrated.

This year’s festival will take place from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Second Street in front of the Sunrise Theatre, 117 S. Second St.. Besides historical exhibitions outside the theater, the festival also features three presentations inside the theater, all tied to events that began in 1923, exactly 100 years ago.

Access to all events at the festival is free, compliments Indian River Media Group, publisher of Indian River Magazine, Space Coast Living, Fort Pierce Magazine and Port St. Lucie Magazine, and presenting sponsor, St. Lucie Battery and Tire. Also assisting in production of the festival are Main Street Fort Pierce, the St. Lucie County Historical Society and the Sunrise Theatre.

The first presentation inside the Sunrise Theatre begins at 9 a.m. and celebrates the centennial of the school that would become Lincoln Park Academy. Back in 1923, few black students were able to attend high school — there was no black high school south of Palatka — and local parents got together to begin a high school in Fort Pierce that would provide an education for black teenagers. The presentation features eight panelists deeply tied to the school, including former School Board member Samuel Gaines, who has written a history on the school. Other scheduled panelists are Veryl Moore, Francina Mimms, Hassie Russ, Harry B. Williams, Ernestine English, Dorothy Jackson and Dave Perry.

The second presentation, at 10:30 a.m., celebrates the Sunrise Theatre, which opened as a vaudeville theater in 1923, the fulfillment of the vision of impresario R.N. “Pop" Koblegard. Two of Koblegard’s granddaughters, Wendy Bishop and Mary Ann Bryan, will help recall the theater’s early days and transition to a movie theater while other panelists, including Main Street Fort Pierce Executive Director Doris Tillman, will share how the theater was restored and reopened to its current splendor in 2006. The session includes a video presentation of rarely seen photographs tracing the theater’s history.

The final presentation inside the theater is at 12:30 p.m. and features a Cow Creek Reunion, bringing people together featured in Indian River Magazine’s Cow Creek Chronicles series that followed the lives of C.F. Raulerson, who founded what would become the Cow Creek Ranch in 1923, and his descendants. Scheduled guests on the panel include Debra Sloan, great-granddaughter of C.F. Raulerson and daughter of Jo Ann Raulerson Sloan and T.L. “Tommy" Sloan, and several of the original Cow Creek cowboys who will talk about the early days of Florida cattle ranching and share their folk traditions that continue today.

The presentations inside the theater are emceed by Gregory Enns, publisher of Indian River Magazine and author of the Cow Creek Chronicles.

Planned exhibitions at the street festival include historical re-enactors from the Seminole War who established Fort Pierce, historical books for sale from the St. Lucie County Historical Society and the Florida Classics Library and exhibitions on the notorious Ashley Gang, a cow camp exhibition from Carlton family descendant Rick Modine, the history of the Spanish treasure fleet that sunk off our coast in 1715, the Navy SEAL Museum, the Treasure Coast Genealogical Society, the Port St. Lucie Historical Society, the Fort Pierce Art Club, the Daughters of the American Revolution, the Fort Pierce Woman’s Club, Main Street Fort Pierce and Indian River Magazine.

The festival also features food vendors, including a genuine Summerlin family fish fry.

Access to all events is free and no tickets are required, but if you would like a guaranteed seat to the sessions inside the theater visit https://indianrivermagazine.com/history-festival-reservations/

SBA offers disaster assistance to businesses and residents of Florida affected by Hurricane Nicole

SBA offers disaster assistance to businesses and residents of Florida affected by Hurricane Nicole

Low-interest disaster loans from the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) are available to businesses and residents in Florida following the announcement of a Presidential disaster declaration due to damages that occurred Nov. 7-30 from Hurricane Nicole.

“SBA’s mission-driven team stands ready to help Florida small businesses and residents impacted by this disaster in every way possible under President Biden’s disaster declaration for certain affected areas,“ said SBA Administrator Isabella Casillas Guzman. “We’re committed to providing federal disaster loans swiftly and efficiently, with a customer-centric approach to help businesses and communities recover and rebuild.”

The disaster declaration covers the following Florida counties:  Brevard, Flagler, Lake, Putnam, Saint Johns and Volusia, which are eligible for both Physical and Economic Injury Disaster Loans from the SBA. Small businesses and most private nonprofit organizations in the following adjacent counties are eligible to apply only for SBA Economic Injury Disaster Loans (EIDLs): Alachua, Bradford, Clay, Duval, Indian River, Marion, Orange, Osceola, Polk, Seminole and Sumter.

Businesses and private nonprofit organizations of any size may borrow up to $2 million to repair or replace disaster-damaged or destroyed real estate, machinery and equipment, inventory, and other business assets.

For small businesses, small agricultural cooperatives, small businesses engaged in aquaculture and most private nonprofit organizations, the SBA offers Economic Injury Disaster Loans (EIDLs) to help meet working capital needs caused by the disaster. Economic Injury Disaster Loan assistance is available regardless of whether the business suffered any physical property damage.

Disaster loans up to $200,000 are available to homeowners to repair or replace disaster-damaged or destroyed real estate. Homeowners and renters are eligible for up to $40,000 to repair or replace disaster-damaged or destroyed personal property.

Interest rates are as low as 3.305 percent for businesses, 2.375 percent for nonprofit organizations, and 2.313 percent for homeowners and renters, with terms up to 30 years. Loan amounts and terms are set by the SBA and are based on each applicant’s financial condition.

Building back smarter and stronger can be an effective recovery tool for future disasters. Applicants may be eligible for a loan amount increase of up to 20 percent of their physical damages, as verified by the SBA, for mitigation purposes. Eligible mitigation improvements may include a safe room or storm shelter, sump pump, elevation, retaining walls, and landscaping to help protect property and occupants from future damage caused by a similar disaster.

Applicants that have an existing SBA disaster loan may apply under this declaration. Businesses and residents with previous SBA disaster loans and current applicants have up to two years from the date of their prior loan approval in which to request a loan increase for mitigation projects.

“The opportunity to include measures to help prevent future damage from occurring is a significant benefit of SBA’s disaster loan program,” said SBA Associate Administrator Francisco Sanchez, Jr. “I encourage everyone to consult their contractors and emergency management mitigation specialists for ideas and apply for an SBA disaster loan increase for funding.”

Applicants may apply online using the Electronic Loan Application (ELA) via SBA’s secure website at https://disasterloanassistance.sba.gov/ela/s/  and should apply under SBA declaration # 17729.

To be considered for all forms of disaster assistance, applicants should register online at DisasterAssistance.gov or download the FEMA mobile app. If online or mobile access is unavailable, applicants should call the FEMA toll-free helpline at 800-621-3362. Those who use 711-Relay or Video Relay Services should call 800-621-3362.

Disaster loan information and application forms can also be obtained by calling the SBA’s Customer Service Center at 800-659-2955 (if you are deaf, hard of hearing, or have a speech disability, please dial 7-1-1 to access telecommunications relay services) or sending an email to [email protected]. Loan applications can also be downloaded from sba.gov/disaster. Completed applications should be mailed to: U.S. Small Business Administration, Processing and Disbursement Center, 14925 Kingsport Road, Fort Worth, TX 76155.

The filing deadline to return applications for physical property damage is Feb. 13, 2023. The deadline to return economic injury applications is Sept. 13, 2023.
