VERO BEACH – The Veterans Council of Indian River County (VCIRC) extends its sincere gratitude to Mrs. Kathi Schumann for her recent donations to the VCIRC. Over the last four years, Mrs. Schumann has donated over $170,000 to support veterans in Indian River County, making her the largest individual donor in the 30-year history of the VCIRC.

Service to our country and our community has been part of the Schumann family for many years. Mrs. Schumann’s husband, John Schumann, was a Lieutenant in the Army, stationed at Fort Lee. Well known in the Indian River County community, her brother Charlie Gollnick served as a Marine Platoon Leader in France during WWII. After his time in the military, Gollnick returned home to serve as a police officer for the City of Vero Beach. His dedication to his country didn’t end there as Gollnick went on to have a 30-year career as a Vero Beach lifeguard, where he is known to have had a remarkable record of saving lives. “Strengthening the Veterans Council of Indian River County strengthens our community,” said Mrs. Schumann. “I am proud to support this organization.”

Mrs. Schumann’s gifts will enable the Veterans Council of Indian River County to continue our mission of supporting Indian River County veterans and their families. The VCIRC depends on donations from our community to support the important services provided to veterans. Whether it is our Upward American Veterans Program (UAV), providing veterans with emergency basic living expenses or our Transportation Service Program delivering our disabled veterans to and from their life-sustaining medical appointments, every day the VCIRC ensures that our veterans have a helping hand when needed.

All this, plus much more, we can do only because of the outstanding support from our donors. “We are proud of all that our community does for our local veterans and we are proud to have earned Mrs. Schumann’s trust,” said Colonel Sam Kouns, U.S. Army (ret), President, Veterans Council of IRC. “On behalf of the veterans we serve and their families, we thank Mrs. Schumann for her concern and generous support of the veterans in our community.”
