FORT PIERCE — The 39th Annual Original Greek Festival returns to St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church in Fort Pierce Feb. 9-11.  The festival will open daily at 11 a.m. and feature live music, dancing, authentic Greek foods, imported Greek wines, beers and other beverages.

The organizing committee expects a crowd of 8,000 or more people to attend the three-day festival. The Greek Festival was formed in 1979 to raise awareness about Greek culture and to fundraise for the church. Over the years, tens of thousands of dollars have been dispersed to local non-profit organizations.

“The Original Greek Festival is a family event,” said Nick Florentinos, one of the event organizers. “It’s a great weekend and lot of fun. We invite the community to join us for this annual celebration of our culture, language and religious heritage.” Proceeds from the festival will benefit community organizations that the church supports, among them are Big Brothers Big Sisters and Hospice of The Treasure Coast.

Attendees will be able to sample an extensive menu that includes lamb shanks, soutzoukakia, moussaka, gyros and souvlaki.  Baklava, koulourakia, kataifi and diples will be among the pastries. The event will also include a variety of booths and vendors selling goods imported from Greece and other countries. Tours of the 200-member church will also be available. Parking will be free.

St. Nicholas Church is located at 2525 South 25th Street, Fort Pierce. For more information, call (954) 540-2707.
